What Triggered the Mass Suicides in Jaipur and Sikar?

The CSR Journal Magazine

A case of mass suicide has come to light in Jaipur and Sikar districts of Rajasthan, five people from one family found dead on Saturday. Five members include mother, and her four children—3 sons and daughter, died by consuming poison. Information of the incident was given by neighbours when they found the flat locked for days and the family wasn’t responding.

Poisonous substance was recovered from scene

This family was a resident of Anirudh Residency on Palwas Road in Sikar. It is alleged that the woman and her children died by consuming poison, and the woman took the extreme step after a dispute with her husband. A packet of poisonous substance was recovered from the scene by the police.

Sikar Sadar police station SHO Indraj Marodia shared details of the incident with media, he said, “Decomposed bodies of 35-year-old Kiran (mother), 3 sons (18-year-old Sumit), (4-year-old Ayush) and (3-year-old Avnish), and 13-year-old daughter Sneha were found in the flat. It is suspected that all five people consumed poison and died by suicide, almost 2–3 days back.”

Sharing details of how they were informed, he said, “We received a complaint from a resident of Anirudh Residency regarding a flat being locked for many days and a pungent smell coming from inside. Upon this complaint when checked, these five bodies were recovered.”

Adding to these details, Sikar Deputy SP Suresh Sharma said, “On receiving complaint we had to break open the door and found these dead bodies, currently the forensic team is collecting samples; and enquiry is underway.”

Family of three die by suicide in Jaipur

In a similar incident in Jaipur, a 63-year-old man, his 58-year-old wife and 32-year-old son died by consuming poison in Jaipur. The incident came to light when the landlord grew suspicious as the door of the tenant remained closed till late afternoon, which was unusual; he informed the police. Police forced open the door and found three members of the family dead.

Karni Vihar police station SHO Hawa Singh said, “63-year-old Rupendra Sharma, 58-year-old wife Sushila Sharma and 32-year-old son Pulkit Sharma were found dead. Prima facie, they consumed poison on Friday night,” Singh added that the prima facie is that the family was struggling with poor financial conditions.
