West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose breaks silence on Kolkata Law College gang rape case, stresses supremacy of law

After days of public outcry and mounting political pressure, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has finally spoken out on the horrific gang rape of a student at South Calcutta Law College. Breaking his silence on Monday, the Governor expressed deep concern over the incident and underscored the urgent need for swift and just action.

In his strongly-worded statement, Bose asserted that “the law is above all,” emphasising that educational institutions must not become breeding grounds for anti-social elements. He called for immediate accountability from all stakeholders, stating that the sanctity of academic campuses must be upheld at all costs.

“The collective responsibility of college authorities and students is to uphold the dignity of educational institutions,” Bose said, urging a united front against any form of lawlessness in educational spaces.

Raj Bhavan issues directive to Calcutta University

Following the Governor’s remarks, the Raj Bhavan issued a formal notification outlining a set of directives to the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University. Bose has instructed that all colleges under the university implement stricter regulations to restore discipline and safeguard students’ welfare.

The Governor confirmed he has been in “regular contact” with the Vice-Chancellor to monitor the developments and ensure prompt administrative action.

Governor Bose also reflected on the broader role of education in society. He remarked that education should not be limited to a means of employment but must be recognised as a pillar of civilisation itself.

“Education is the birthplace of civilisation and a path to mental intelligence and problem-solving,” he stated. The Governor stressed that the academic environment should instil values like tolerance, empathy, respect and responsible behaviour in students.

Recalling Bengal’s legacy of reform and resistance

Bose also drew attention to West Bengal’s historical legacy in shaping modern India. He noted that the state once led the Indian Renaissance and played a pivotal role in movements for justice, equality, and freedom.

“No one, regardless of their influence, can be permitted to exercise unchecked power in educational spaces,” he said, adding, “The rules apply to everyone equally. No external force can override duly constituted administrative procedures.”

In an appeal to the student community, the Governor quoted British historian Thomas Fuller: “You will never be able to rise so high. The law will be above you.” Urging students to continue their academic pursuits without fear, Bose called upon society to stand united against any attempt to derail the education system.

Push for a speedy and impartial probe

Concluding his statement, Governor Bose reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice in the Kasba Law College case. He has directed a thorough, impartial, and speedy investigation into the incident, assuring that law and order will be maintained in all educational institutions across the state.

The Governor’s intervention comes amid ongoing protests, public anger, and questions over campus safety—marking a critical turning point in the handling of the case.
