A notable case in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has resulted in a mother testifying against her own son, leading to his life imprisonment in connection with his father’s murder. The verdict was handed down by Additional Sessions Judge Tabrez Ahmed on March 19. The accused, identified as Chhatrapal, had fatally attacked his father with a sickle on April 11, 2025, following a heated argument regarding their family land, which spans approximately 10 bighas or 60 acres.

The victim, described by family members as a person of timid disposition, had not transferred ownership of the land. This situation contributed to numerous disputes between him and his son over time. After the assault, Chhatrapal fled from the scene. The victim’s mother and sister-in-law raised an alarm, which drew attention to the incident. Despite efforts to transport him to a local hospital, the victim succumbed to his injuries during the journey.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented a total of seven witnesses, which included the victim’s brother. Significantly, the mother offered crucial testimony against her son, stating that she did not wish to see him again and confirmed his involvement in the murder of her husband. The court’s findings were heavily influenced by her eyewitness account, which was instrumental in securing a conviction.

In addition to the life sentence, the court also imposed a financial penalty of Rs 1 lakh on Chhatrapal. This case underscores the critical role that eyewitness testimonies, particularly from family members, can play in the judicial process, emphasizing their value in achieving swift and just outcomes in serious criminal cases.
