US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar on September 28 to pay his respects. The visit was marked by heightened security arrangements around the shrine. This visit is part of Gor’s broader itinerary as he travels across India to engage with various communities and stakeholders.

Prior to arriving in Amritsar, Ambassador Gor had been to Srinagar and Leh. His travels emphasize the US commitment to engage meaningfully with diverse regions within India. The heightened security measures during his visit highlight the sensitivity of the area, particularly in light of its historical significance and importance to the Sikh community.

Engagement with Local Political Leaders

Emaan Singh Mann, the Acting President of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), expressed intentions to discuss several issues concerning Punjab and Sikh rights during his meeting with Ambassador Gor. Mann highlighted the importance of this visit for the Sikh community and articulated the need for addressing local concerns amid ongoing tensions influenced by India-Pakistan relations.

Mann indicated that he would raise issues concerning the security situation in Punjab, particularly in relation to the border areas of Amritsar, which face threats due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan. He referenced significant historical agreements such as Operation Sindoor and the Indus Waters Treaty, advocating for renewed dialogue and restoration of cooperative water relations.

Furthermore, Mann has submitted a comprehensive seven-point demand to the US, calling for sustained diplomatic engagement to avert potential India-Pakistan hostilities. His requests include restoring water cooperation, consideration for the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline, and the facilitation of lawful trade and travel across the India-Pakistan border to enhance economic ties.

Focus on Sikh Rights and Concerns

The discussion between Mann and Gor is expected to encompass a broad range of topics, including the upcoming elections for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), issues surrounding religious freedom, and the human rights situation of Sikhs, specifically mentioning activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Mann underlined the Sikh community’s claims to self-determination and the urgent need for international acknowledgment of these rights.

In addition to advocating for better relations and cooperation with Pakistan, Mann urged the United States to support an inquiry into these pressing issues affecting Sikh rights. He called for recognition of aspirations for an independent Sikh state, signalling the complex dynamics of regional politics and identity within Punjab.

Meanwhile, local law enforcement confirmed extensive security protocols were in place to ensure the safety of the Ambassador during his visit. RPS Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Law and Order in Amritsar, reported that around 150 personnel, both in civilian and uniformed attire, were stationed throughout the area to maintain security and prevent any disruptions.

Sandhu reassured that comprehensive security arrangements had been implemented in anticipation of any potential disturbances, particularly with reports of wall writings that could incite unrest. Measures were taken to ensure the environment remained stable during this significant visit by Ambassador Gor, illustrating the authorities’ preparedness to handle any situation that might arise.
