ONGC is the largest crude oil and natural gas Company in India, contributing around 71 per cent to Indian domestic production. Crude oil is used to produce petroleum products like Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, Naphtha, and Cooking Gas LPG.
The PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas aims to take up CSR Activities for promoting healthy environment and environmental sustainability with a view to mitigating the impacts of its operations on the environment and tries to focus its CSR efforts towards improving the lives of its surrounding communities by broadly addressing the focus areas of education, healthcare, nutrition and drinking water in its onshore areas of operation and development of coastal community and marine and coastal ecology in offshore areas of operation.
As per directives of Niti Ayog, ONGC has identified 20 Aspiration districts and is committed to raising the social and economic condition of these districts by implementing strategic CSR projects. In recent years, the company has undertaken major CSR projects in areas like Health Care, Education, Skill Development, Swachh Bharat and Rural Development.
Focus on Education, Healthcare, Community Development
ONGC’s is committed to improving the quality of education and supporting skill development. Its Ankleshwar Asset launched a skill development initiative aimed at enhancing employment opportunities for youth in the Narmada district, under the Aspirational Districts Program (ADP).
The initiative involved training beneficiaries in various sectors including tourism, hospitality, healthcare and tailoring. In Silchar, Assam, ONGC provided vocational training programme to 100 unemployed youth in the Hailakandi District, equipping them with the necessary skillsets to secure gainful employment in the telecommunication sector.
ONGC is committed to enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality for the underserved communities. ONGC Mumbai facilitated the installation of 7 patient monitoring systems, along with a centralized system in a multispecialty hospital.
ONGC invests in building infrastructure such as roads, community centres, sanitation facilities and drinking water projects in its operational areas. The Company undertook an initiative aimed at positively impacting the education and well-being of school children and local communities in the Junagadh District, Gujarat.
ONGC’s environmental and sustainability initiatives focus on promoting ecological balance and combating climate change. As a part of these initiatives, the Cambay Asset has implemented a 13 KW solar photovoltaic system at Madla Talav, a popular public park in Khambhat, making it a first park of its kind in the area.

ONGC’s CSR policy focuses on projects and programs within India, aiming to benefit marginalized, disadvantaged, poor, and deprived sections of the community and the environment. The goal is to positively impact the lives of those at the bottom of the demographic pyramid.
While ONGC has been involved in various welfare activities since its inception, it has now adopted a more structured approach. The company has undertaken numerous projects related to infrastructure development, education, and healthcare in remote areas predominantly inhabited by disadvantaged groups.
CSR spent in FY24
Through CSR initiatives, ONGC contributed for sustainable development of remote areas of the country. In FY24, ONGC registered highest-ever CSR expenditure of Rs 634 crore including highest-ever expenditure of Rs 81 crore in Company’s Aspirational Districts. This was way more than the company’s total CSR obligation for the financial year — Rs 604.19 crore.
The company is involved in CSR activities with people-centric actions benefitting over 3.5 crore Indians.
Top CSR Projects of ONGC
Siu Ka Pha Multispeciality Hospital, Sivasagar, Assam
ONGC has taken up a mega CSR initiative towards addressing the health care concerns of people in the Northeast by setting up a Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sivasagar, Assam. The services of the first Phase of the 300 bed hospital was opened for public in the first week of March 2019. The hospital has been built at a cost of Rs 483 crore. The Hospital has been funded by ONGC under CSR and will be managed and operated by Aurangabad-based Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Vaidyakiya Pratisthan (BAVP).
The state-of-the-art hospital, spanning over 35 acres, has 300 beds and a team of specialised doctors. It has modular operating theatres, a critical care unit and telemedicine facilities, connecting patients with specialist healthcare providers nationwide.
The project has improved access to multi-specialty care in terms of treatment, diagnostics, and intensive care for critically ill patients in Sivasagar as well as neighbouring districts such as Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Golaghat and neighbouring states such as Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.
Empanelment under Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY has led to improved dialysis patient footfalls (5,800+ dialysis patients treated in FY23 out of which 36% were ONGC patients, 54% PMJAY patients, and 9% cash patients) at the hospital, with improved service provisioning by Internal Medicine Specialists and a visiting Nephrologist.
Skill Development Institute (SDI), Ahmedabad
The courses conducted by the SDI in Ahmedabad aim at providing long-term solution to the region’s development issues by equipping disadvantaged youth with industry ready skills relevant to multiple sectors, ensuring sustainable long term employment opportunities. 488 candidates were trained in 2021-22 in 9 different sectors which include Hydrocarbons, capital goods, green jobs such as solar PV installation, apparel, healthcare, automotive and electronics. 76% placement rates were achieved in the year 2021-22.
Vocational Education and Rehabilitation of youth at Drug De-Addiction Centre in Kashmir
The activities of the project have facilitated in mainstreaming of local youth towards nation building. Students in the vocational training centre highlighted the boost in confidence, access to free learning, newfound independence, and the reputed faculty and placement organisations as the key positive aspects of their overall experience. The increased involvement of families and friends through outreach activities has also led to increase in trust and belief for this ONGC CSR project.
The drug de-addiction centre had a target to treat 1300 patients a year. Approximate 9,727 patients have been treated since 2014, the inception of the centre in Baramulla, Kashmir out of which a total of 3,878 patients have recovered.
Establishment of National Cancer Institute, Nagpur
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Nagpur is a notable example of successful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The project is a result of collaboration between ONGC Foundation and Dr. Aabaji Thatte Seva Aur Anusandhan Sanstha, the implementing partner for the project.
ONGC Foundation extended support of Rs 100 crore to the NCI project worth Rs 565.20 crore, which is part of its CSR initiatives. This funding helped to provide world-class cancer care facilities at affordable rates to the general public in Central India.
The NCI is a 470-bedded quaternary care oncology centre designed to provide comprehensive cancer treatment, patient care, and research through sustainable charity. The institute aims to make quality cancer care accessible to those in need. NCI has state-of-the-art facilities for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancers. The centre also has groups of highly skilled professionals for treating specific types of cancers and plans to start university-recognized training courses.
Over 1.10 lakh patients have received treatment at NCI Nagpur since inception with an average daily footfall of 300-400 patients. A total of 32 state of the art medical equipment have been installed in the hospital as part of the project. Over 80% consultant physicians at NCI Nagpur are trained by experts at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. The project provides access to affordable cancer care for the beneficiaries, as many of the patients seeking diagnostic and therapeutic care are from vulnerable communities.
ONGC Super 30, Almora and Srinagar
ONGC Super 30 is a flagship CSR project, providing free residential coaching and mentorship to underprivileged students for admission to top engineering and medical colleges like IITs, NITs, and AIIMS. The objective of ONGC Super 30 is to bridge the socio-economic gap by empowering underprivileged students to pursue their dreams of becoming engineers or doctors.
Over 60% students from Super 30 Almora centre secured admissions in IITs and NITs, while 33% students from Srinagar centre are pursuing medical studies in Government medical colleges, 18% in Nursing and 4 % in dental colleges. At least 3536 students appeared for the entrance test, among which 59 deserving students were shortlisted. 65% of underprivileged students who lacked access to coaching facilities in their locations were provided with quality coaching t the ONGC Super 30 Centre located at Almora and Srinagar.
Purchase and Supply of 12 Bandicoot robots
ONGC’s CSR initiative has indeed been involved in the purchase and supply of Bandicoot robots, aiming to eliminate manual scavenging and improve sanitation practices. Developed by GenRobotics, this robot is designed to clean manholes efficiently and safely, reducing the need for human entry. It features a human-comparable robotic arm, advanced sensors, and their waterproof cameras enable efficient cleaning even in low-light conditions.
ONGC has handed over Bandicoot robots to various cities, including Haridwar and Vijayawada, as part of their CSR initiatives. In Haridwar, the robot was introduced to address the challenges of sewer network management during high pilgrim visits.
The deployment of Bandicoot robots has transformed the lives of sanitation workers, providing them with safer and dignified jobs as robot operators. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision to eradicate hazardous manual scavenging and promote mechanized cleaning.
At least 95% of the sewage cleaning work can now be performed without entering the manhole by using the robotic machine installed by ONGC as part of the CSR project. The project has led to a notable increase in efficiency in sewer cleaning operations, as evidenced by the significant reduction in manual scavenging incidents and improved technical capabilities of sanitation workers/robot operators to perform cleaning operations. Sanitation workers reported improved mental wellbeing after deployment of the robotic machine. Deployment of robots has also enhanced efficiency in cleaning the manhole.
The project collaborates closely with municipal corporations to align its goals and objectives with the broader sanitation initiatives of the government. This collaborative planning ensures that the project’s activities are integrated into existing municipal strategies and frameworks to ensure the sustainability of the project.
Old Age Facility – Vishranti in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh
The Old Age Facility – Vishranti in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, is an initiative supported by ONGC’s CSR efforts. More than 95% of the senior citizen who have availed the facilities at Vishranti, were satisfied with the facilities provided at the centre. Besides, safe and respectful living facilities, the proximity of the centre to medical facilities have been an added advantage for the elderly citizen.
The CSR project has already created employment opportunity for 18 support staff who are from the local area. The centre has maximum possibility of self-sustainability as the facility created through funding from ONGC is of superior quality and the operational expenses is managed from the fee contributed by the beneficiaries.
