UAE Extends Distance Learning in Schools Till April 17, 2026 Amid Safety Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

The UAE has officially confirmed the extension of distance learning across all educational institutions until April 17, 2026. This decision keeps millions of students out of physical classrooms for an additional two weeks. The announcement was made by the UAE Ministry of Education, indicating that the extension will apply to all nurseries, kindergartens, public and private schools, as well as their teaching and administrative personnel throughout the country. The aim is to ensure the safety and well-being of students and educators while continuing educational activities through digital means.

Rationale for Extended Online Classes

The continuation of remote education is part of a broader transition that began in early March. Schools in the UAE first shifted to online classes between March 2 and March 4, followed by an early spring break from March 9 to March 22, necessitated by regional circumstances. As Term 3 was set to commence on March 23, authorities opted to maintain online learning rather than reopen campuses. Originally, the plan was to resume in-person classes by early April; however, this latest extension has revised that timeline to mid-April. This reactive approach highlights the flexibility of UAE authorities in handling the educational landscape amid ongoing developments.

Impact on Various Educational Curricula

The decision affects a broad array of educational institutions across multiple curricula. Numerous Indian curriculum schools, such as Delhi Private School Dubai and Credence High School Dubai, are continuing their online classes through the end of the academic term, allowing students to participate virtually instead of returning to campus briefly before the new session. Likewise, schools following the British, IB, and American curricula in Dubai and other emirates had previously planned for staggered reopening dates in early April, which are now postponed. In Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the northern emirates, many schools had already initiated the new academic year online, in accordance with directives from local education authorities. For younger students, mock online sessions have been organized over weekends to assist families in transitioning to digital learning formats.

University Adaptations to Distance Learning

Though schools remain fully online, universities in the UAE are implementing a more adaptable approach. Following guidelines from the Ministry of Higher Education, some institutions began a gradual return to campus starting March 30, but this is limited to courses requiring physical presence, such as clinical training, laboratory work, and field-based programs. Examinations may also be conducted on campus as necessary. However, several notable institutions continue to provide remote education, with the American University of Sharjah remaining entirely online until further notice. The American University of Ras Al Khaimah has prolonged remote learning until early April, while the American University in Dubai continues to conduct virtual classes. This hybrid strategy illustrates a shift towards more flexible educational systems rather than a uniform reopening plan.

Operational Structure of Online Learning

Schools across the UAE have now established structured digital routines, replicating full-day schedules akin to traditional classrooms. Students are participating in live virtual lessons, completing assignments online, and engaging in regular assessments through dedicated learning platforms. Schools have also enhanced communication with parents to ensure students remain academically engaged. Earlier, authorities released detailed guidelines for Term 3, promoting flexible timetables, continuous evaluation methods, and improved collaboration between educators and families, thereby minimizing disruption and supporting learning continuity despite the extended campus closures.

Future of In-Person Learning

As of now, April 17 remains the provisional return date for in-person classes; however, officials have clarified that the situation is subject to continuous evaluation. Any decision regarding the resumption of onsite education will rely on changing regional conditions, safety evaluations, and approvals from relevant authorities, such as Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). Schools seeking early reopening must submit detailed applications, which will be examined individually before approval. Until such decisions are made, distance education will remain the primary form of learning across the UAE, marking a significant and structured phase of online education during this period.
