Tesla’s First Showroom Opens in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tesla, the global electric vehicle pioneer led by Elon Musk, has officially opened its maiden showroom in India. The new experience centre, located at Maker Maxity Mall in the prestigious Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marks a significant step for both Tesla and the Indian automobile industry. This development comes after years of speculation, discussions, and anticipation surrounding Tesla’s entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing car markets.

On Tuesday morning, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the 4,000-square-foot Tesla Experience Centre. The launch was attended by other senior officials and industry leaders. With this event, Mumbai has become the first Indian city to get a Tesla showroom, setting the stage for an electric mobility revolution in the country.

What’s Inside the Showroom?

The Tesla Experience Centre is a modern, minimalist space, designed in line with the company’s international standards. The showroom features white-themed interiors, lightboxes displaying Tesla’s innovations, and beautiful visuals celebrating Indian culture—creating a perfect blend of global technology and local flavour. Currently, Tesla’s Model Y is centre stage at the Mumbai outlet. Customers can explore the car, learn about the technology, and get a feel for the Tesla experience. However, initial reports say test drives and vehicle deliveries might not begin immediately.

The Model Y, Tesla’s much-awaited electric SUV, is the first vehicle to be showcased at the Mumbai showroom. It will be available in both Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD variants. The initial batch of cars has arrived as fully built units imported from Tesla’s factory in Shanghai. The price starts around ₹60 lakh, with the final cost influenced by India’s import duties on electric vehicles, which currently stand at up to 70 percent.

Only Showroom, Not Local Manufacturing (For Now)

Tesla’s entry into India is retail-focused for the time being. The company has made it clear that its current operations are limited to importing and selling vehicles—there are no immediate plans for local manufacturing. Union Minister for Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy, recently confirmed that Tesla is “not interested in manufacturing in India” at this time. While this retail-first approach is a cautious entry, there are ongoing discussions about policy changes and incentives that could attract Tesla to make in India in the future.

Bandra Kurla Complex was selected as the ideal site, being Mumbai’s premier financial and commercial district. The monthly rent has reportedly been set at nearly ₹35–38 lakh. Reliable sources also indicate that New Delhi is next on Tesla’s expansion list, with a showroom expected to launch soon in Aerocity near the airport. Additionally, Tesla has started recruiting local talent for its India operations, with jobs posted for store and customer relations managers.

The launch is being viewed as a milestone not just for Mumbai, but for the entire country’s electric vehicle ecosystem. Industry watchers expect that Tesla’s move will push other automakers to fast-track their own electric plans, improve charging infrastructure, and bring global attention to India as a major EV market. Although Tesla is starting cautiously by importing vehicles, the company’s Indian journey is expected to accelerate in the years ahead, especially if government policies turn favourable for local production.
