Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson recently unveiled a statue of Swami Vivekananda, emphasising the significance of his speech delivered at the Parliament of the World’s Religions over a century ago. Wilson pointed out that Vivekananda’s address opened with the phrase “sisters and brothers of America,” which encapsulated the idea of shared humanity transcending individual differences. This message, she stated, remains relevant today as a guiding principle for the city of Seattle.

During her speech, the Mayor expressed that this statue serves as more than a mere monument; it is a testament to the values of respect and connection that Seattle strives to uphold. She remarked that the presence of the statue encourages a sense of belonging among all who reside in the city, further uniting diverse communities.

In her remarks, Wilson acknowledged the warm reception from the Kent community and the wider Seattle community, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to learn about Indian culture. She stated that the city has benefitted greatly from the ideas and traditions brought in by diverse communities, especially the contributions inspired by Vivekananda’s philosophies. He is celebrated as a figure who seamlessly blends Eastern and Western thought.

She described Vivekananda as a universal thinker who stands at the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern inquiry. His influence is portrayed as both scientific and deeply rooted in the spiritual teachings of the Vedas, making him a symbolic figure for both past and contemporary society.

Seattle’s installation of a life-size statue of Swami Vivekananda at Westlake Square Park marks a significant milestone, as it is the first instance of a city government in the United States honouring him in such a public way. This statue serves not only as a tribute to Vivekananda’s legacy but also as a reminder of the enduring values he espoused for unity and understanding among all people.
