A village sarpanch was fatally shot in a crowded market area in Moga district, Punjab, on Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as Harpinder Singh, also known as Happy, who served as the sarpanch of Patto Hira Singh village and owned a local fitness center, Sujan Gym, in Bagha Purana.

Details of the Attack

The incident occurred around 10:30 am when Harpinder was arriving at his gym driving a Mahindra Thar. As soon as he exited the vehicle, multiple assailants in a Toyota Fortuner opened fire on him. Police reports indicate that Harpinder sustained six to seven gunshot wounds during the attack.

Medical Response and Outcome

Following the shooting, Harpinder was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility in critical condition. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The attackers fled the scene promptly after the shooting, evading capture.

Prior Threats to Victim

According to law enforcement, it has come to light that Harpinder had received threats just a day before the shooting incident. He was known to possess a bulletproof vehicle; however, on this occasion, he opted for a different, non-armoured car, which may have contributed to the vulnerability he faced.

Police Investigation Underway

Law enforcement officials reported receiving alerts regarding gunfire around 11 am on the day of the incident. A police team was dispatched to the location to initiate an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the murder may have been related to personal rivalries.

Identifying the Assailants

Authorities have begun to uncover details regarding the attackers. Some suspects have reportedly been identified, and efforts are underway to apprehend them swiftly. The investigation remains active as police work to gather further evidence related to the shooting.
