Sam Altman Advises IIT Delhi Students Against Traditional Career Advice

The CSR Journal Magazine

At an event held in Dogra Hall at IIT Delhi, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman cautioned students against the pitfalls of following conventional career advice, particularly from their parents. He emphasized that the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence could alter the job landscape significantly. This statement has generated a mix of responses on social media platforms. Altman remarked, “Listening to old people is the biggest mistake young people make,” which drew laughter from the audience. He underscored the necessity for students to cultivate their own instincts regarding career choices in a swiftly evolving world.

While advising against dependence on older generations for career insights, Altman acknowledged the invaluable role parents play in imparting life values. He stated, “For a predictor of what the world is going to be like going forward, I don’t think you should trust me for good intuition about the rate of change,” adding that young individuals are often better at adapting to future job requirements.

Emphasizing the Importance of Agency

Throughout his lecture, Altman highlighted the concept of “agency,” which he defined as the belief in one’s ability to shape outcomes. He remarked, “Agency is also a learnable skill,” while noting that societal pressures can undermine this belief. The OpenAI CEO noted that the current climate values agency more than ever, stating, “The returns on agency clearly have never been higher,” reflecting on how AI allows individuals to accomplish tasks previously requiring larger teams. “A single person with drive and an idea can make amazing things happen,” he affirmed.

Altman recounted the early challenges faced by OpenAI, emphasizing that the vision behind its founding was often dismissed as unrealistic. He advised students that if they are passionate about their ideas, even if unpopular, they stand a better chance of success due to less competition. “This was certainly the story of OpenAI,” he remarked, encouraging persistence and conviction in their pursuits.

Encouragement to Embrace Risk

During the discussion, Altman urged students to embrace risk-taking and resilience, noting a cultural tendency in India to shy away from risks. He quoted himself, saying, “My willingness to fail allows me to succeed.” When asked to identify a crucial skill for IIT students to cultivate this year, he succinctly replied: “Resilience.”

Addressing the concerns surrounding job displacement by AI, Altman expressed that a balanced outlook is needed, stating, “Anyone who says they’re only excited or only fearful about AI is not being very thoughtful.” He confirmed that while some job roles may be eliminated, history indicates that new positions will often arise at an unexpected pace. He concluded by telling the students, “Many of you will eventually do jobs that don’t exist today, even as a concept.” This insight aimed to instill a sense of adaptability and forward-thinking among the participants.
