Rishabh Pant Focuses on Simplicity After Test Vice-Captaincy Loss

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rishabh Pant has lost his position as the Test vice-captain and is not regularly featured in India’s ODI lineup. Nevertheless, he emphasises the importance of staying grounded and focusing on upcoming opportunities rather than dwelling on the past. Currently in Srinagar for the Irani Cup, Pant is set to represent the Rest of India, marking his first appearance in red-ball cricket since India’s Test series in Sri Lanka last month. This comes just as he prepares for the forthcoming Test series against New Zealand.

Pant acknowledged that playing for India at this stage is about making the most of the chances he receives. He reiterated, “For me, it’s very simple. Whatever is in front of me, I will give my best.” His commitment to simplicity in approach has been a consistent theme in his career thus far, as he aims to capitalise on every opportunity that comes his way.

Currently, Pant has settled into the role of a one-format player for India, with KL Rahul being the preferred wicketkeeper for ODIs. Additionally, Pant’s absence from the squad for the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies reflects the shifting dynamics within the team.

Dealing with the Highs and Lows of International Cricket

Pant shared his insights on the challenges of maintaining consistency in international cricket, noting the inevitable ups and downs that accompany an athlete’s career. “I try to give my best every time I take on the field. And that has been the key for me over a period of time,” he commented. He recognised that sustaining an international career over 15 to 20 years necessitates resilience and the ability to navigate obstacles.

The road to recovery has significantly influenced Pant’s perspective on the game. After suffering multiple injuries in a car accident in December 2022, he was unable to play for nearly 18 months. “When you have gone through so much in your life, you understand that keeping it simple is the key,” he explained, reinforcing the importance of a straightforward mindset in professional sports.

Pant also highlighted the necessity of hard work and mental fortitude to excel at the international level. He stressed that regardless of one’s status, continual learning and improvement are vital components of a successful career in cricket.

Preparation for the Irani Cup and Future Challenges

The recent three-week break before the Irani Cup has allowed Pant some valuable time for recovery and reflection. He stated that he is choosing to concentrate on his performance and not stressing over selection, form, or fitness. “Especially when you’re going through a long rehab, it’s always frustrating,” he said, acknowledging the difficulties of keeping a positive mindset during rehabilitation.

He expressed the importance of avoiding overthinking, which can present unique challenges for athletes. However, Pant is resolute in his belief that overcoming such adversities is part and parcel of playing at the international level.

Pant’s dedication to his game remains unwavering as he looks forward to the Irani Cup. His clear focus on the simplicity of his approach may serve as a valuable asset as he continues to navigate the complexities of international cricket. As he prepares to take the field, his commitment to giving his best effort comes across as a pivotal element in his professional journey.
