Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on Friday that all proposals aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine are still valid. During a press briefing in St Petersburg, Putin indicated that Russia was willing to explore negotiations with Kyiv following the recent parliamentary elections in Russia. Despite this openness, he alleged that Ukraine had engaged in attacks against Moscow and polling stations, fuelling tensions.

Putin emphasised that Ukraine had instigated the conflict, making unfounded claims regarding his country’s actions. He warned that Ukraine would face a prolonged and robust military response if provocations continue. His comments suggested a hardening stance against what he referred to as provocative actions taken by Ukraine, which he believed necessitated a decisive Russian retaliation.

Responses to Ukrainian Attacks

The Russian leader also noted that the military actions undertaken by Russia in response to Ukraine’s provocations have led to renewed demands for a ceasefire from Kyiv. He stated, “They are all on the table. It’s all possible,” regarding potential peace discussions. However, he reiterated that the history of engagements and confrontations would compel Russia to assess its future actions very carefully.

Ukrainian officials have notably claimed that their military strikes on Russian targets are responses to the ongoing assaults on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructures, which Ukraine alleges have resulted in significant civilian casualties. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for direct negotiations, seeking an immediate end to the hostilities.

Putin further accused Ukraine of attacking polling stations during the recent elections, alleging that such actions resulted in injuries and even fatalities among election officials. He highlighted that these provocations from Ukraine contributed to an atmosphere of distrust and violence, further complicating the prospects for dialogue.

Military Developments and International Context

As the conflict continues, Russia has been persistent in its missile and drone assaults on Ukrainian urban centres. In response, Ukraine has escalated its own military operations targeting Russian military assets and energy infrastructure, including sites within Russian territory. Putin pointed out that Ukraine’s appeal for negotiations may stem from challenges faced against advanced Russian drone technology, which operates at high altitudes and is more difficult to intercept.

Additionally, Putin alleged that Ukraine has been responsible for provocations, which included attacks on Russian cities during significant events, such as an international conference in St Petersburg in June and during the parliamentary elections. This cycle of retaliation and military escalation underscores the ongoing complexities surrounding the conflict and the environment for peace negotiations.

In a different context, Putin expressed approval for any positive agreements reached between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that his attendance at the forthcoming APEC summit in China would depend on domestic developments within Russia. This comment reflects the interconnected nature of international relations and the influence of global politics on regional conflicts.
