President Trump Rejects Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 21, US President Donald Trump stated that the United States does not intend to pursue a ceasefire in the conflict involving Iran. Speaking to reporters outside the White House before his departure to Palm Beach, Florida, Trump emphasised that military operations continue to be a focus. He remarked, “We can have dialogue, but I don’t want to do a ceasefire. You don’t do a ceasefire when you’re literally obliterating the other side… we’re not looking to do that.”

During his statements, Trump expressed surprise regarding the United Kingdom’s recent decision to grant the United States permission to use its military bases for strikes on Iranian missile sites. He noted, “I was a little surprised at the UK, to be honest with you. They should have acted a lot faster.” The UK’s expanded approval pertains to what it defines as “defensive operations” aimed at undermining Iranian missile capabilities linked to threats against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Reaction to UK’s Decision

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, criticised the UK for allowing US military operations from its bases, warning that this decision jeopardises British lives and aligns the UK with American aggression. In a statement posted on X, Araghchi pointed out that “the vast majority of the British People do not want any part in the Israel-U.S. war of choice on Iran,” accusing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer of disregarding public sentiment and putting citizens at risk. He reiterated that Iran will assert its right to self-defense.

Trump Indicates Possible Winding Down of Military Operations

Later in his address, President Trump mentioned that the United States is approaching its military goals in the Middle East, specifically concerning Iran. In a post on X, he stated, “We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East with respect to the Terrorist Regime of Iran.” He outlined several key objectives, including degrading Iranian missile capabilities, dismantling Iran’s defense industrial base, and preventing the nation from achieving nuclear capability.

Trump also discussed security in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, suggesting that nations relying on this vital shipping route should take the lead in guarding it. “The Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it. The United States does not!” he stated, while offering US assistance if requested. He stressed the importance of eradicating the threat from Iran, asserting that it should not be difficult for allied nations to police the area once the Iranian threat is neutralised.
