PM Modi Introduces MANAV Vision for AI at India AI Impact Summit

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the “MANAV Vision for AI” during the India AI Impact Summit 2026, outlining a human-centric approach to the development and governance of artificial intelligence. In his keynote address, he emphasized that MANAV, which translates to ‘human,’ embodies the principles guiding AI’s future.

Breaking Down MANAV: Ethics, Accountability and Inclusion at the Core

During his speech, Modi elaborated on the key components of the MANAV framework. The ‘M’ stands for moral and ethical systems, advocating for AI to be grounded in ethical considerations. The ‘A’ represents accountable governance, calling for transparent regulations and strong oversight mechanisms. ‘N’ emphasizes national sovereignty, highlighting the importance of individuals’ rights over their data. The next ‘A’ focuses on accessibility and inclusiveness, signifying that AI should function as a tool for enhancement rather than concentration of power. Finally, ‘V’ points to the need for AI systems to be valid and legitimate, ensuring lawfulness and verifiability in AI applications.

Call for Global AI Standards to Tackle Deepfakes and Digital Threats

Modi asserted that this vision is crucial for humanity’s welfare in a technologically driven world. He stressed the importance of fostering international collaboration to establish global standards for AI, particularly in countering threats like deepfakes and misleading content, which can destabilize societies.

Embedding Trust in AI Through Transparency and Authenticity Labels

In his address, the Prime Minister called for embedding trust within technology from its inception. He suggested that digital content should be accompanied by authenticity labels to distinguish between genuine and AI-generated materials. With AI increasingly generating texts, images, and videos, he highlighted the need for watermarking and clear sourcing as essential standards for the industry.

AI Must Empower People, Not Reduce Them to Data Points

Modi also cautioned against viewing individuals solely as data points within AI systems. He emphasized the necessity for AI to democratize technology and serve as a vehicle for inclusion and empowerment, especially for developing nations. He used the GPS metaphor to illustrate his point about AI’s directionality, stating that while AI can guide us, human judgment must ultimately guide decision-making.

Human Judgment Over Machine Dominance: Steering AI Responsibly

He characterized AI as possessing transformative power, warning that without proper direction, it could lead to disruption. However, if steered correctly, AI holds the potential to provide valuable solutions. Modi reiterated that shifting the focus of AI from being machine-centric to human-centric is essential, framing this as the main goal of the summit and aligning it with broader societal welfare.

Summit Focuses on Ethical Frameworks for Human-Centric AI Governance

As discussions continue at the summit, participants are encouraged to engage in developing frameworks that prioritize ethical principles and human-centered governance in AI technology, reflecting Modi’s vision for a balanced integration of AI into society.
