PM Modi Highlights Five Key Areas for Strengthening India-Canada Relations

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi articulated five essential areas to enhance cooperation between India and Canada, emphasizing sectors such as clean energy, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and food processing. During a meeting with business leaders, PM Modi invited their participation, stating, “To move these shared ambitions forward, I will put some suggestions before you,” detailing proposals tailored to boost the bilateral economic partnership.

Commitment to Clean Energy

Underscoring the commitment to clean energy, PM Modi described it as a priority for both nations. He mentioned the escalation of cooperation in nuclear energy and a long-term agreement for uranium supply. Referring to the Canadian company Cameco, he remarked on the positive insights shared by its CEO and expressed a desire to advance collaborative efforts in small modular reactors, advanced reactors, and the entire nuclear value chain.

Strategic Minerals and Supply Chains

In addition to clean energy, PM Modi addressed the need for cooperation in critical minerals. He stated, “We have also taken steps to create resilient supply chains for critical minerals.” He suggested that India’s scaling capabilities in batteries and energy storage could synergize with Canada’s technological innovations, facilitating progress in this sector.

Infrastructure Investment and Partnerships

The second priority outlined was infrastructure and capital partnership, where PM Modi highlighted a record allocation of 130 billion dollars in this year’s budget dedicated to infrastructure development. He pointed out that under the National Infrastructure Pipeline, investments amounting to 1.3 trillion dollars are being initiated. He noted the significant Canadian investments in India, specifically mentioning that Canadian pension funds have allocated 100 billion dollars, reflecting deep trust and inviting further collaboration in India’s infrastructure growth.

Advancing Artificial Intelligence

The Prime Minister also pointed to the potential for collaboration in emerging technologies, specifically artificial intelligence. He stated, “Third, AI: We can work together to create joint AI compute corridors and AI innovation sandboxes for startups,” indicating a desire to enhance partnerships in next-generation digital capabilities.

Manufacturing and Technology Cooperation

In terms of manufacturing, PM Modi emphasized the need to bolster global value chains by merging Canada’s technology with India’s production scale. He highlighted sectors such as electronics, aerospace, and engineering as areas ripe for collaboration.

Emphasis on Food Processing

Identifying food processing as the fifth priority, the Prime Minister remarked on the rapid development of mega food parks, cold chains, and food testing laboratories in India. He suggested that this sector could illustrate the benefits of win-win cooperation between the two countries.

Strategic Energy Partnership Launched

Earlier on the same day, India and Canada announced a Strategic Energy Partnership aimed at significantly boosting bilateral energy trade and enhancing cooperation in clean energy, critical minerals, and nuclear sectors. In a joint statement with PM Modi, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described this partnership as a new phase in India-Canada relations, offering “generational opportunities” for both nations. He noted that India’s energy demand is anticipated to double by 2040, with plans to add 500 gigawatts of renewable capacity by the decade’s end, stressing Canada’s role as a strategic partner in India’s clean technology and nuclear objectives.
