Older Workers Report Lower Levels of Negative Stress, Study Finds

The CSR Journal Magazine

On World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10, findings from the ADP Research’s People at Work 2026 report reveal significant differences in the frequency of negative stress among various age groups. Notably, nearly half of workers aged 65 and above, approximately 48 per cent, experience negative stress less than once a month. This contrasts with 32 per cent of those between the ages of 55 and 64 who report similar experiences.

The findings suggest that workers aged 55 and older are less likely to experience frequent negative stress when compared to their younger counterparts. The report emphasises that older employees are just as likely to find meaning in their work and maintain engagement, underscoring the critical nature of meaningful work and employee involvement for this demographic.

Such insights establish a broader understanding of workplace dynamics, especially as organisations evolve in their approaches to employee well-being and support structures. This emphasis on quality engagement may contrast with the experiences of younger workers, who may report higher levels of stress.

Financial Confidence Among Different Age Groups

The report also sheds light on the financial confidence of workers across generations. Globally, only 10 per cent of individuals aged 55 to 64 strongly agree that they feel secure about their financial situation, which is significantly lower compared to 19 per cent of workers aged 18 to 26 and those from the 27 to 39 age group. In India, however, the results reveal a different trend.

In the Indian context, 37 per cent of workers aged 27 to 39 express confidence in their financial health, compared to 31 per cent of those aged 55 to 64 and 28 per cent of workers aged 18 to 26. This group shows a notable difference from the global figure of 19 per cent for the same age cohort, suggesting that young Indian workers have comparatively less financial confidence.

This disparity in financial outlook may have broader implications for workplace dynamics and employee satisfaction. As organisations consider strategies for employee engagement, understanding these financial confidence levels can guide tailored initiatives aimed at enhancing workforce morale.

Career Development and Skills Readiness Across Ages

The report further examines career development and skills readiness, highlighting the varying perspectives across generations. On a global scale, 30 per cent of workers aged 27 to 39 acknowledge possessing the necessary skills for career advancement in the coming three years. India sees a higher percentage, at 42 per cent, indicating a stronger sense of preparedness among this age group regarding their career trajectories.

Moreover, the report indicates that 35 per cent of Indian workers stated that changing jobs had become easier in the past year, with 12 per cent reporting it as much easier. Conversely, younger workers faced increased challenges, with 19 per cent of those aged 18 to 26 finding it much harder to switch jobs during the same period.

The survey also highlights a gap in employer support for career development, with only 30 per cent of Indian workers strongly agreeing that their employers are investing in necessary career advancement skills. Such findings suggest a critical need for organisations to reassess their commitment to employee development in a multigenerational workforce.

Dr Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP, notes that as artificial intelligence reshapes operational tasks, companies must implement people-centric and data-driven strategies to meet the diverse career needs of a multigenerational workforce. The report from ADP Research drew upon data from over 39,000 working adults across 36 markets, examining workforce sentiment across various demographics.
