New UPI Rules Come into Effect from August 1: What Every User Needs to Know

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s most used digital payment system, now follows new rules from August 1, 2025. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) aims to protect users, reduce network congestion, and improve the payment experience. Whether you use PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm or a bank’s own UPI app, these rules apply to you.

Limits on Daily Balance Checks

From now on, users can check their bank account balance up to 50 times in a day using each UPI app. This means if you try checking your balance on PhonePe for the 51st time in a day, the feature will be disabled in PhonePe for the next 24 hours, but you can still check it on another app. This limit helps ensure the UPI system does not slow down during busy hours, reducing network strain caused by repeated balance inquiries, especially by automated bots.

In addition, after every successful payment, your app will display your latest account balance automatically on the screen. This lets you monitor your finances easily without making extra clicks or wasting time searching for another balance check button. The new system is particularly helpful during busy times like salary days or festival sales when network load is heavy across India. NPCI believes these changes will keep the payment channel fast for everyone.

New Rules for Checking Transaction Status

If you have a transaction that is stuck or still processing, you now get just three chances to check its status. You need to wait at least 90 seconds between each attempt. The system tracks your checks and will not allow you to “refresh” or “retry” again before 90 seconds. Earlier, people refreshed their screens multiple times, putting extra load on bank and NPCI servers, which led to slower services for all.

These new restrictions help avoid system overload and make transaction processing more smooth nationally. Banks have already updated their mobile apps: now, if you try to check the status more than allowed, you will receive an easy-to-understand message explaining the rule and when you can try again.

Changing Timings for Autopay Transactions

UPI “autopay” features enable automatic deduction of money for EMIs, SIP investments, OTT subscriptions, or utility bills. According to new rules, NPCI allows banks to process these transactions only during three windows: before 10 am, from 1 pm to 5 pm, and after 9:30 pm. These windows avoid peak traffic hours, giving better speed and reliability to all.

If your autopayment is set for a busy slot, the app may re-schedule it within any allowed window, sometimes running the debit earlier or later than expected. Banks will attempt to deduct the payment a few times if the first try fails due to network issues or insufficient balance. After several failed attempts, they will cancel the request and notify you through the app. Customers should remember to maintain enough balance and check their notifications regularly to avoid missed auto-deductions.

Stopping Fraud with Better Verification

To keep your money safe, UPI apps must now clearly display the bank name and other verified details of the person or business you want to pay, right before you confirm any money transfer. This extra step helps you double-check who is getting your money. It prevents common mistakes like choosing the wrong contact or falling for scams where fraudsters create similar names and UPI IDs.

NPCI has kicked off a safety feature — money transfers where both the sender and receiver are the same person’s account (self-transfers on same UPI handle) are blocked. This new restriction helps prevent certain types of fraud or technical misuse that have been reported in the past.

Banks and apps must not hide or make it tough for you to see important account details. If any transaction fails, your app will provide clear reasons for the failure so users know whether to try again or not.

Linking Bank Accounts and Mobile Numbers

You now have the facility to link up to 25 different bank accounts with a single mobile number in one day. NPCI made this rule to support users who use multiple accounts for salary, savings, family, or business. If you run into problems while linking, you will see a clear message about the issue and suggestions to try again the next day.

For those changing phone numbers, banks and apps refresh their records at least once a week now. This limit prevents confusion, errors, and accidental re-assignment of your UPI handle (like @okaxis or @okhdfcbank) to another person’s mobile number. This rule is most useful if you recently switched SIMs or changed service providers.

Importantly, banks must now take your clear and separate permission each time you link or update a UPI number. No app is allowed to “auto-consent” for you or sneak it into the payment steps. If you are linking a co-applicant account or shared wallet, everyone involved must confirm. This step puts you in direct control of your banking security.

Clear and Respectful Communication

NPCI insists that banks and apps use polite and clear language while seeking permissions or displaying warnings. No user should ever feel threatened, misled, or pressured. If you feel that an app uses aggressive pop-ups or confusing terms, you can raise a complaint with NPCI or your bank, and they must address it.

Clear language helps build trust between all users—schoolchildren, shopkeepers, elderly users, and tech-savvy youth. Your rights and information remain protected under these new communication standards.

What These Rules Mean for You

UPI drives lakhs of crores in digital transactions every month and continues to power India’s digital economy. These new rules are small changes, but together they ensure you get faster payments, reduced chances of error, lower risk of fraud, and an overall friendly experience. Even if some rules appear restrictive, they safeguard your money and privacy. With more Indians using UPI daily, such steps make the system reliable for every home, shop, and business in Bhopal and across the nation.
