The CSR Journal Magazine

Following backlash over its perceived casteist connotations, Neeraj Pandey has confirmed that the title of Manoj Bajpayee’s film will undergo a change. In an official affidavit, Pandey stated that the original title, ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’, has been completely retracted and will not be utilized in any form moving forward. He emphasized that while a new title has yet to be determined, any future title selected will be distinct from the previous one that has been met with objections. The director noted that the new title will accurately portray the film’s narrative and intent, avoiding any potential for misinterpretation.

Withdrawal of Promotional Material

Pandey also mentioned that all promotional materials, including posters and trailers, associated with the now-withdrawn title have been removed prior to the formal petition listing. This measure aims to alleviate concerns surrounding the film and its implications.

Political Reactions to Caste-related Titles

In a related development, a Bihar minister has raised concerns over another film titled ‘Yadav Ji Ki Love Story’, labeling it as caste-indicative. Rajeev Ranjan Prasad, national spokesperson for the Janata Dal (United), voiced that such titles may exacerbate social tensions. He indicated that previous petitions involving films with similar contentious titles are still being heard by the judiciary, highlighting an ongoing issue in the film industry regarding sensitive topics related to caste.

Regulatory Actions in Indian Cinema

Meanwhile, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has requested filmmaker Anurag Kashyap to remove a reference to former U.S. President Donald Trump from his latest project, ‘Kennedy’. These regulatory decisions reflect a growing scrutiny of film content in India, underscoring the complexities surrounding freedom of expression in cinema.

Cinema’s Evolving Landscape

The recent events signal a changing atmosphere in the Indian film industry, where titles that touch upon sensitive societal issues are coming under increasing pressure. As filmmakers navigate these challenges, the discourse surrounding caste representation and the implications of film titles continues to be a focal point
