Congregations are particularly large in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, while West Bengal’s celebrations carry distinct socio-political motifs.

Mumbai, viewed as the focal point of this ten-day festival, has drawn countless devotees to the renowned Lalbaugcha Raja pandal. The atmosphere is invigorated by spirited chants of ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ as attendees gather to pay their respects and seek blessings from the deity.

In Nagpur, the Shri Ganesh Mandir Tekdi witnessed the performance of Mangal Aarti, enhancing the reverence of the occasion. Meanwhile, in Jaipur, devotees began arriving early at the prominent Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple, where the ‘Mangla Aarti’ started at 5:00 AM. The temple remains open for darshan until the ‘Shayan Aarti’ at 11:40 PM, allowing over 19 hours for prayer and reflection.

Cultural Expressions in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka

Tamil Nadu is also participating in the celebrations with fervour. The Karpaga Vinayakar Temple in Pillayarpatti, situated in the Sivaganga district, has attracted thousands of worshippers from dawn, where they partake in special rituals and prayers.

In Bengaluru, fervent worshippers are decorating the Sri Dodda Ganapathi Temple in Basavanagudi, joining in the Gauri-Ganesha and Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. The enthusiastic engagement reflects the cultural significance these celebrations hold within communities.

These gatherings in southern India exemplify the devotion associated with Ganesh Chaturthi while also showcasing the regional customs and traditions that have developed around the festival over the years. West Bengal’s Unique Blend of Celebration and Commentary

In West Bengal, Ganesh Chaturthi seems to weave an intriguing blend of cultural celebrations alongside contemporary socio-political commentary. In Kolkata’s Baguiati area, the Executive Palace Apartment Owners’ Association has constructed a puja pandal themed around ‘Parivartan – Towards a Developed Bengal with a Double Engine Government’.

This installation features a replica of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, combined with models of protesting doctors holding placards stating “We Want Justice.” Such themes resonate with the public sentiment and highlight critical issues while celebrating the festive occasion.

Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has actively participated in the festivities, inaugurating a Ganesh Puja celebration in Panihati, North 24 Parganas. He suggested that the widespread observance of this festival signifies a cultural awakening, stating that transformations are identifiable in Bengal. Ghosh expressed optimism for a ‘New Bengal,’ asserting that the enthusiasm surrounding the celebrations signals a shift towards prosperity.

Ghosh commented on the creative interpretations seen in Kolkata’s pandals, where local artisans capture both historical struggles and hopes for a brighter future. He noted that many themes reflect on Bengal’s turbulent past, shining a light on aspirations for industrialisation and progress, contributing to the rich narrative of this year’s celebrations.
