A minor patient was sexually assaulted allegedly by a former ward boy at the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon (October 22), when a ward boy molested a 15-year-old girl by posing as a doctor. Based on the complaint, the police have arrested the accused and an investigation has been launched.

The minor had gone to the outpatient department of SSKM for treatment on Wednesday. It is alleged that the incident took place then. Allegedly, the 15-year-old girl was taken to the hospital toilet and sexually assaulted. An investigation has been launched based on the complaint.

Case registered under POCSO Act

On Wednesday night, cops from Bhowanipore Police Station arrested the accused from Kolkata’s Dhapa area. The accused, who is a former ward boy at the hospital and was posted at another state-run hospital, Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital. A case has been registered against the arrested person under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The teenaged girl had visited an outpatient’s department at SSKM on Wednesday afternoon. Her parents alleged that while they were occupied at the ticket counter filling up and submitting the form required for meeting a doctor, the accused lured the girl on some pretext to the washroom at the trauma care centre.

The case involving threats and assault on a female doctor at Uluberia Medical College and Hospital in Howrah has sparked widespread protests by doctors’ unions and political parties over the safety of women and medical professionals in West Bengal.

Three persons were arrested on Monday (October 20, 2025) for assaulting a woman junior resident doctor at Uluberia Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College and Hospital. The accused, reportedly, family members of a patient, had allegedly manhandled and abused her earlier that afternoon.

The incident has provoked sharp condemnation from Bengal’s medical community. Organisations like the West Bengal Doctors’ Forum, Service Doctors’ Forum, and the Joint Platform of Doctors submitted deputations to hospital authorities, highlighting a repeated pattern of violence against healthcare workers.

Last year a post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at another state-run hospital, the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, leading to months of protests that reverberated nationally.
