A man has been apprehended in Erode district, Tamil Nadu, for allegedly instructing a student to mix powdered cow dung into sambar intended for a government school’s free breakfast programme. The individual, identified as Arumugam, reportedly carried out this act as retaliation after the dismissal of his wife from her position as a cook at the same institution. The case has raised serious concerns about food safety and the lengths to which individuals might go in seeking revenge.

The alleged contamination took place on August 29. According to police reports, a complaint was filed on September 1, following the discovery of an unusual taste in the food prepared for staff members. Teachers at the school tasted the sambar before it was distributed to students and found it to have an unexpectedly bitter flavour, prompting an investigation into the cause.

Investigation and Arrest

Following the discovery of the contaminated sambar, the school staff alerted local authorities, leading them to investigate the situation further. Police sources indicated that while the sambar tasted odd, their initial suspicion was directed toward an accidental overuse of turmeric by the school cook. However, upon deeper examination, it became clear that cow dung powder had been specifically added to the sample that was served to the teachers.

On investigation, law enforcement officials determined that the food intended for the students had not been compromised, as the cow dung powder was only mixed into the portion reserved for staff tasting. This rapid response from the authorities ensured that no students were harmed by the incident, which could have led to severe health risks.

Arumugam was subsequently charged under Section 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to causing harm through means perceived as dangerous or poisonous with the intention of committing an offence. This legal action underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are treating this troubling event.

Public Response and Safety Measures

The incident has sparked significant concern among parents and local residents about food safety practices within government-run school programmes. Many parents have expressed their distress at the thought that food intended for their children could have been tainted. Local authorities and school management are now focusing on enhancing safety protocols to ensure that similar situations do not arise in the future.

Officials have reassured the public that they will be conducting thorough checks and implementing stricter measures to monitor the meals served to students. This includes increased oversight from food safety inspectors and more rigorous training for staff members responsible for preparing meals under government schemes.
