Mamata Banerjee forms Committee to Oversee Legal Matters

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has formed a new committee to oversee the legal matters of the state government, especially matters which are pending in High Court or Supreme Court.

According to state administration sources, the committee will be headed by the Chief Secretary Manoj Pant. Under him six ministers will be there in the committee. These ministers include Aroop Biswas, Firhad Hakim, Malay Ghatak, Bratya Basu, Chandrima Bhattacharya and Sashi Panja.

What will be the function of the committee

A senior official of the state government said, “From now on, this committee will decide the stand of state government or handle different situation in different cases which are pending on the Calcutta High Court or Supreme Court. Without this committee, the state government will not take decision on any case pending in the court.”

This committee will also decide in which cases, what type of lawyer should be deputed.

Why this committee has been formed

A Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar upheld the Calcutta High Court’s verdict annulling the appointment of 25,753 teachers and ordering the TMC government in the state to initiate a fresh selection process.

A senior official of the state government said, “This is not the first time state government faced set back in front of apex court or High Court. In future some other cases are also pending which are very important cases. Within that we have primary recruitment scam case in which total panel is more than 30 thousand of teachers. If that also will be cancelled then government will face severe crisis. So, save that this committee is necessary.”
