Kerala Prepares for 2026 Assembly Elections Amidst Close Contests and NOTA Growth

The CSR Journal Magazine

As Kerala gears up for its forthcoming Assembly elections in 2026, analysis of the previous electoral battle in 2021 reveals a competitive political landscape characterized by narrow victory margins and a notable presence of NOTA (None of the Above) votes. According to an evaluation by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Kerala Election Watch, NOTA accounted for 0.47% of the total votes, with 97,695 ballots cast for this option out of over 2.08 crore votes. This figure remained relatively stable compared to the 0.5% recorded in 2016, indicating a consistent but limited expression of protest among voters that has yet to significantly sway election outcomes.

Voting Patterns and Results

Detailed constituency data from the 2021 elections highlights that many victories were closely contested. The average vote share of winning candidates was 47.98%, with only 39 out of 140 MLAs receiving more than 50% of the vote. Notably, 101 elected candidates managed to win with less than half of the total votes cast, showcasing the influence of multi-cornered contests involving the Left Democratic Front (LDF), United Democratic Front (UDF), NDA candidates, and independents. This competitiveness is further illustrated by the fact that two constituencies were won with fewer than 500 votes, while a significant number of seats had margins of victory below 10%. Only five constituencies reported margins exceeding 30%, making decisive victories quite uncommon.

Trends in NOTA Votes

The analysis of NOTA voting revealed variations across different constituencies. Thalassery topped the list in terms of NOTA votes, with 2,313 registered, while Kalamassery had almost 0.97% of its votes cast for NOTA. Constituencies like Chittur, Manjeri, Sulthan Bathery, Vallikunnu, Paravur, Thripunitura, and Alappuzha also recorded over 1,000 NOTA votes. However, it is noteworthy that NOTA did not influence the outcome in any election seat.

Overall Electoral Dynamics

The broader electoral landscape from 2021 reflects complexities in voter behavior. Data shows that 77 candidates who emerged victorious were wealthy, with numerous MLAs facing criminal charges. Furthermore, female representation was limited, with only 11 women elected to the Assembly. Despite these factors, voters predominantly based their choices on party affiliation and local dynamics rather than shifting towards options like NOTA.

Local Elections Point to Future Shifts

Emerging trends from the local body elections of 2025 hint at possible changes leading up to the 2026 Assembly elections. While the LDF maintained around 40% of the vote share, it experienced notable seat losses within both urban and rural areas. The UDF achieved 43.21% of the total votes, and the BJP-led NDA secured close to 16%, primarily benefiting from improved seat conversion rates. In terms of Assembly segments, the UDF led in 81 constituencies, compared to the LDF’s 57, with several districts reflecting very narrow margins.

Implications for Upcoming Elections

In at least 32 constituencies, the LDF’s margin of loss was between 1,000 and 10,000 votes, underscoring the significance of minor fluctuations in voter turnout. The data further indicates a propensity for sharper three-cornered contests and emerging vulnerabilities within urban voting demographics. Taken together, the evidence suggests that upcoming elections in Kerala are likely to be driven by closely fought contests, where even slight variations in vote share, including potential increases in NOTA beyond its current 0.47%, could play a crucial role in determining outcomes in tightly contested areas.
