Karzai Criticises Pakistani Airstrikes, Urges Afghan Unity Against Aggression

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kabul witnessed renewed tensions as former President Hamid Karzai publicly condemned what he termed as recent Pakistani airstrikes targeting Afghan cities. In his statement on a social media platform, he emphasized that the Afghan populace would unite to defend their homeland against any external aggression. He specifically called out the bombings in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia, asserting that Afghans would respond with resolute courage in all circumstances.

Karzai accused the Pakistani military of perpetuating a cycle of violence through its operations. He expressed concern that Pakistan needed to reassess its approach towards Afghanistan, advocating for good neighborly relations instead of military confrontations. He remarked that the ongoing issues related to violence and bombings in Pakistan stem from its own policies and actions.

Details of Recent Military Engagements

In an official statement, the Afghan Ministry of National Defence reported retaliatory strikes that resulted in the deaths of 55 Pakistani soldiers. This operation occurred along the Durand Line on February 26, coinciding with the beginning of Ramadan. The statement indicated that Afghan forces initiated these actions in response to what they described as cross-border violations by Pakistan, claiming that Pakistani military personnel had intruded upon Afghan territory and caused civilian casualties.

Retaliatory Operations and Their Impact

The Afghan government detailed the specifics of the retaliatory operations, asserting that several Pakistani military posts were targeted in provinces such as Paktika, Paktia, Khost, and Nangarhar. Data released by the ministry suggested that during the four-hour operation, significant damage was inflicted on Pakistani military infrastructure, including the destruction of two bases and the capture of 19 military posts. Furthermore, Afghan forces reportedly seized a range of military equipment during these engagements.

While Afghanistan claimed substantial gains in the operation, it also reported that eight Afghan fighters lost their lives, with an additional 11 sustaining injuries. The Afghan Ministry noted that civilians were also impacted, with reports of injuries from a missile strike on a refugee camp in Nangarhar, emphasizing the collateral damage that accompanies such military actions.

Pakistan’s Response to Afghan Actions

In response to the developments, Pakistan launched its own military operations against what it described as Afghan Taliban targets. According to government statements, these operations resulted in the deaths and injuries of numerous Taliban fighters and the destruction of various militant posts across several border regions. Pakistani officials confirmed the death of 133 Afghan Taliban members and extensive military engagements in areas such as Khyber and Bajaur.

As tensions escalated, a Taliban spokesperson reported ongoing airstrikes by the Pakistani military in major cities, including Kabul and Kandahar, although he noted that there were no immediate reports of civilian casualties from these strikes. The exchange of military actions between the two countries underscores the rising volatility in the region, marking an ongoing conflict situation that has implications for both nations’ security dynamics.
