Karachi Bakery Faces Action Over Hygiene Violations in Hyderabad

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent inspections by Hyderabad food safety officials have led to the suspension of licences for five sweet-manufacturing and retail establishments, including the well-known Karachi Bakery. This action follows the discovery of significant hygiene and licensing violations during inspections conducted by the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG-SAFE) on 4 October 2026.

Officials inspected 16 sweet-manufacturing and retail units across the city, resulting in the seizure or disposal of 3,546.5 kg of food items valued at ₹16.86 lakh. In addition, 22 food samples were collected for testing due to suspicions of adulteration, with results pending.

Among the establishments affected, G Pulla Reddy Sweets in Sanathnagar was noted for the largest quantity of seized food, with 3,133 kg worth ₹15.03 lakh confiscated from their premises. The inspections revealed a range of violations that raised concerns about food safety and public health.

Specific Violations Uncovered During Inspections

The inspections revealed several alarming hygiene violations across the establishments. Among the issues identified were rotten vegetables, rat droppings, expired and mislabelled food products, and improper storage practices. Additionally, the manufacturing and washing areas were found to be unhygienic, posing potential health risks to consumers.

Food handlers at these establishments were also noted for maintaining poor personal hygiene. Furthermore, it was discovered that some businesses were operating under incorrect licence categories, which has led to immediate cessation of operations in the interest of public health.

In total, the establishments whose licences were suspended include Agra Mithai Ghar Restaurant in Charminar, Sweetone Ruchulu India Pvt Ltd in Vanasthalipuram, Balaji Sri Kishan Mithai Bhandar in Falaknuma, and Hirani Foods Pvt Ltd, which runs Minerva Sweets in Kattedan. These actions reflect a stringent approach to ensuring food safety standards are upheld in the city.

Show-Cause Notices Issued to Additional Establishments

In addition to the licence suspensions, TG-SAFE has issued show-cause notices to seven other establishments, including Bharat Baklava in Sanathnagar, Karachi Bakery International in Timmapur, and Balaji Sweets in Champapet. Other establishments receiving notices include Mamatha Sweet House in Secunderabad, SK Foods in Kattedan, Hameedi Confectionaries at MJ Market, and Annapurna Caterers in Chudi Bazaar.

Moreover, an improvement notice was issued to Sri Shagun Mithai Vatika in Himayathnagar. Officials have indicated that these establishments will undergo re-inspections to ensure compliance with food safety regulations. The outcome of these follow-up inspections will determine if further actions, including penalties, will be imposed.

The enforcement of food safety regulations is critical to safeguarding public health, and the recent actions taken by TG-SAFE underscore the importance of maintaining hygiene standards in food establishments across Hyderabad.
