Jadavpur University deceased student’s parents allege foul play, murder case registered in Kolkata

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kolkata Police has registered a murder case in Jadavpur University female student’s death. The body of a third year English Literature student Anamika Mondal was recovered from a pond inside Jadavpur University on September 11. On Monday, a murder case was registered based on a written complaint from the student’s family. On Monday, the student’s parents went to Lalbazar and spoke to the police. After that, they went to Jadavpur Police Station and filed a written complaint.

Body of a third-year undergraduate student of English was recovered at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University’s (JU) Gate No. 4 on Thursday night. She was declared brought dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. The deceased student Anamika Mondal was a resident of North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal.

Alleging that their daughter was murdered, Anamika’s parents met Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and other officers at Lalbazar on Monday. Her parents have stated that they suspect foul play in their daughter’s death.
‘This is not an accident, it is a murder,’ the father of the deceased student told media on Monday.

Accidental death or murder? Deceased student’s friends summoned

How did the Jadavpur University student die? Did she fall and drown? Or was she murdered? The police are investigating all possibilities. What exactly happened on Thursday night?

Anamika’s classmates have been summoned again by the police on Monday to uncover the truth. Seven students of Jadavpur University were summoned on Sunday by the Kolkata Police in connection with the unnatural death of third-year English honours student Anamika Mondal. Three of them appeared on Sunday for interrogation.

On Thursday evening, a cultural programme organised by drama club was going on till late night at the university. Anamika was present at the programme. At around 10:20 pm, students present on the campus saw her floating in the pond in an unconscious state. After that, she was rescued and taken to the nearby KPC Hospital. There, the doctors declared Anamika dead.

The police have already taken Anamika’s mobile phone into custody along with CCTV footage from the university premises. “We are also examining the call details of the victim to find out with whom she was in touch before the incident happened,” said an officer of Kolkata Police who is part of the probe team.

The deceased’s father said that the police should try to find out who Anamika was talking to and what she was talking about before getting inside the lake. He has also questioned the police about whether Anamika got into the water by choice or someone pushed her. The police are investigating.

Anamika’s call details, JU campus CCTV footage being checked

“We are also examining the call details of the victim to find out with whom she was in touch before the incident happened,” said an officer of Kolkata Police who is part of the probe team.

There are three CCTV cameras in front of Gate No. 4 of the university. However, there is no camera facing the pond from which the student was rescued. It is not yet clear how Anamika fell into the pond. The initial autopsy report mentions death due to drowning. However, a sample has been sent for viscera test to find out whether she had consumed alcohol or any other drugs. This matter will be clear only after viscera test reports.

NCW writes to Kolkata Police Commissioner seeking impartial probe

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women on Sunday wrote to the Kolkata Police commissioner, seeking a thorough and impartial investigation along with forensic examination and post-mortem report over Anamika’s death.

Vijaya Rahatkar, the commission’s chairperson, in her letter, has sought an “enquiry into the role of the university authorities” in ensuring campus safety.

The commission has also sought a timely update for the victim’s family and strict action “if any foul play is found”. “A detailed action taken has been sought within three days,” says a post put out on the commission’s X Handle on Sunday.

The commission has taken a suo motu cognizance of the death and has filed a case.
