Is Pak former PM Imran Khan alive? as rumours sweep the internet

The CSR Journal Magazine

The rumours around former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s custodial death is spreading on the Internet, after Imran’s three sisters accused the state machinery of brutally assaulting them when they insisted on meeting their brother. Imran’s sisters Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan and Dr Uzma Khan have accused the state of not allowing them to meet the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman for over three weeks now.

From the past two days, Imran Khan has been a trending topic on social media platforms because of the unclear situation. Amidst all the rumors and discussion a Afghan media report has claimed that Imran was killed inside Adiala Jail. One of the leading newspapers of Afghanistan reported that the 72-year-old leader “succumbed to alleged mistreatment” in custody. Even the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Balochistan has shared on the official handle that Khan was assassinated in Adalia jail. In a post on X, it is said that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, and Army chief General Asim Munir planned the murder of Imran Khan. The post even warned that if this news is true then, “If this information is confirmed to be true, it marks the absolute end of terrorist Pakistan. The collapse of its last remaining legitimacy will begin the moment the truth is exposed to the world,”.

What Pakistan has to say about Imran Khan’s death?

No credible source has confirmed this news and also the Pakistani government officials have denied the Afghanistan media report, and made a comparison with the similar rumour on Khan’s death that spread in May this year. A photo of Imran Khan in hospital has also gone viral, which has been dismissed as fake. Besides, the sit-in protest in front of Adiala Jail by Khan’s three sisters and supporters has been called off, after successful negotiation with police. As per a news report from Pakistan, police have assured a meeting with Imran to be arranged at the earliest. Protestors dispersed peacefully after the meeting was confirmed to happen on Tuesday. Imran, a cricketer-turned-politician, has been behind bars since August 2023 for web of corruption cases. There has been an undeclared ban on Imran’s meeting for a month.

Is Imran Khan being tortured?

Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan alleged that her brother is kept in a ‘death cell’ that is normally reserved for hardcore terrorists. A lawyer representing Imran said that basic facilities like books, essential items and even lawyers have been blocked for Irman. Lawyer Khalid Yousaf Chaudry said, “The law of the jungle prevails here, where only the beast who rules has rights. No one else has any rights,”.

Even visitors aren’t allowed to meet Imran, even Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was denied the meeting. Despite seven tries to meet Imran, Afridi has been denied by the jail authorities.
