In his speech, Pezeshkian showcased large images of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and over 150 Iranian schoolchildren who lost their lives during the early stages of the war. He conveyed that Iran had solely defended itself from foreign aggression, specifically naming the US and Israel as the aggressors.

Responses to Trump’s Statements

Pezeshkian directly responded to Trump’s threats, indicating that those who attempt to intimidate Iran should understand that the country is open to dialogue and negotiation. He emphasised that these discussions should occur without the “language of force.” Furthermore, he claimed that Iran has not targeted civilian populations, despite evidence indicating otherwise, including casualties among civilians such as mariners and migrant workers.

Pezeshkian’s arrival in New York was marked by heavy security and examination, which reflects his status as a moderate within the Iranian political framework. His remarks came shortly after Trump indicated on the same platform that he was contemplating escalating military actions against Iran. Trump mentioned the existence of significant decisions regarding whether a deal could lead to Iran emerging as a powerful nation or to swift military action against it.

Following the President’s declarations, he provided updates regarding discussions between his key envoys and Iranian officials, which reportedly lasted three hours. While he did not furnish many specifics, he characterised the discussion as “very good.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio also noted that Trump was receptive to meeting with Pezeshkian during his time in New York.

Tehran’s Position on US Engagements

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, reiterated Tehran’s conditions for engaging with the US, stating that any negotiations should involve lifting the blockade on Iranian ports and the release of Iranian assets that remain frozen. Baghaei referred to the recent interactions as the first indirect communication since a ceasefire collapsed in June. He claimed that the talks mediated through Qatar were not novel occurrences.

Pezeshkian’s address marked a notable moment in the ongoing discussions between Iran and the US, as both nations have been signalling their willingness to engage diplomatically while simultaneously trading accusations.
