The registration for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 has been postponed once more, as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has yet to activate the application link for prospective candidates. Initially, the institute revealed that the application process would commence on August 27. However, this timeline was not adhered to, with no link available for registration as of that date.

The official GATE 2027 website has currently marked the opening date for the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) as “To Be Announced” (TBA). The site mentions that online registration will “start soon,” but fails to provide a new date for when candidates can begin applying.

This recent delay follows a previous announcement from IIT Madras, which had first scheduled the GATE 2027 registration to start on August 14. A rescheduling was later communicated on August 13, pushing the timeline to August 27. With this update, candidates are left awaiting further information regarding the application procedure.

Application Deadlines and Requirements

Although the exact opening date for GATE 2027 registration remains unclear, IIT Madras has communicated revised deadlines for the submission of applications. Candidates must now ensure that their applications are submitted by September 27, 2026, to avoid any late fees. There will be an extended period during which candidates can submit their applications with a late fee until October 5, 2026.

A designated period for application corrections is set to occur between October 14 and October 21, 2026. Candidates are encouraged to routinely check the official GATE 2027 website for updates regarding the revised registration date and additional procedural information.

As an addition to this year’s process, IIT Madras has mandated the use of DigiLocker for identity verification in GATE 2027. This marks the first time that registration via DigiLocker is compulsory for Indian nationals. Candidates should create or update their verified DigiLocker accounts prior to commencing the application to facilitate the process.

GATE 2027 Examination Schedule

The GATE 2027 examination is slated to take place on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21, 2027. Following the completion of the exams, results are expected to be announced on March 19, 2027. The GATE scores are essential for admissions into various postgraduate and doctoral programmes at institutions that participate in the examination.

In addition to the regular updates, there is the introduction of a new test paper focused on Robotics and Automation. This development brings the total number of available test papers for GATE 2027 to 30, further expanding the range of options for candidates pursuing advanced studies in various engineering disciplines.

GATE scores are not only utilised for admissions but are also a key criterion for recruitment in several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). This aspect highlights the importance of the GATE examination in shaping the academic and career paths of engineering graduates across India.
