The night of New Year’s Eve celebrations is certainly different from other nights of the year. It’s filled with celebrations including staying up late, eating, drinking, and revelry. And along with that comes excessive alcohol consumption. But can your stomach handle such abuse in just one night? In most cases, people eat and drink so much on the night of December 31 that they feel unwell the next day, January 1. Some suffer from hangovers, while others experience stomach problems. If you have to go to the office and work the next day, it becomes even more troublesome.
No matter how much fun the festive night may be, the next morning that joy often turns into headaches, fatigue, and hangovers for many. Having to return to work and manage office duties in that state makes you think, “I shouldn’t have eaten and drunk so much last night!”
But don’t worry. By following a few simple steps, you can overcome the sluggishness of a hangover and feel completely refreshed again.
What causes hangover?
Hangover is a collection of unpleasant physical and mental symptoms, like headache, nausea, fatigue, and irritability, that occur after drinking too much alcohol, caused by dehydration, inflammation, acetaldehyde buildup, and alcohol’s effects on the stomach and sleep.
Symptoms usually peak as alcohol leaves the system and can last for hours or over a day, varying by person and drink type, with darker liquors potentially worsening effects due to congeners.
A hangover is caused by a mix of factors from drinking too much alcohol, primarily dehydration, the buildup of the toxic compound acetaldehyde, stomach irritation, low blood sugar, disrupted sleep, and an inflammatory immune response, leading to symptoms like headache, fatigue, nausea, and anxiety. The liver processes alcohol into acetaldehyde, which causes inflammation, while alcohol’s diuretic effect leads to dehydration, making you feel worse.
What to do to cure a hangover?
Drink plenty of water

Alcohol dehydrates the body. As a result, you suffer from headaches, nausea, and fatigue the following morning. If you have consumed alcohol at night, the first thing to do after waking up the next morning is to drink water. Drinking water helps a hangover by combating the dehydration alcohol causes, since alcohol is a diuretic. However, it doesn’t cure the whole thing; you also need electrolytes like salt, potassium to restore balance, as pure water doesn’t fix the inflammation, oxidative stress, and other issues that cause headaches, nausea, and fatigue, so sip water and electrolyte drinks to rehydrate and feel better.
Consume honey

A spoonful of honey the following morning after a party works like medicine. The antioxidants and potassium in honey help the body recover quickly. It’s even better if you spread honey on toast or biscuits. Honey may help alleviate hangover symptoms because the fructose it contains can help the body metabolize alcohol more quickly and replenish low blood sugar. However, scientific evidence on its effectiveness is limited, and time is considered the only true cure for a hangover.
Fresh fruit juice and coconut water
Glucose-rich fruit juices are very effective in combating dehydration. Orange, apple, or coconut water helps restore the body’s energy. Fresh fruit juice can help alleviate symptoms and support your body’s recovery process by addressing several issues caused by alcohol consumption, such as dehydration, low blood sugar, and nutrient depletion.
Alcohol is a diuretic, which causes the body to lose fluids and leads to dehydration, a primary cause of hangover headaches and thirst. Fruit juices, which have a high water content, help rehydrate the body effectively. Dehydration also leads to a loss of essential electrolytes like potassium and sodium.
Certain fruit juices and coconut water are rich in these minerals, helping to restore your body’s balance. Coconut water is a natural electrolyte. It quickly replenishes the water lost due to excessive drinking the previous night.
Drinking alcohol can lower blood sugar levels. The natural sugars, primarily fructose, in fruit juice can provide a quick source of energy, helping to normalize blood sugar levels and combat fatigue and headaches.
Boiled eggs

The protein and amino acids in eggs help detoxify the body. However, not fried—boiled eggs work best in the morning. Eating boiled eggs helps cure hangovers primarily because they contain cysteine, an amino acid that helps your liver break down acetaldehyde, the toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism that causes hangover symptoms like headaches and nausea. Eggs also provide protein for sustained energy and nutrients to replenish your body, making them an excellent, easy-to-digest option for morning-after recovery, say health experts.
Have a bowl of hot soup

Have a bowl of hot soup before going to the office the following day. Steaming hot soup not only keeps the stomach light but also warms the body, thus reducing fatigue quickly. Hot soup, especially chicken noodle, helps hangovers by rehydrating you with fluids and electrolytes (sodium), replenishing lost nutrients, providing easy carbs for energy, and the warmth soothes your stomach and eases headaches, making it a comforting, nutrient-rich recovery meal rather than a greasy quick fix.
Does lemon juice in water cure hangover?

Lemon juice in water is great for hangovers because it helps rehydrate and replenish electrolytes (like potassium with a pinch of salt), boosts liver function to clear toxins, and can calm nausea with its refreshing properties, though adding sugar or honey helps with low blood sugar. While it aids recovery, it doesn’t instantly cure hangovers; proper hydration, rest, and nutrition are key.
However, lemon water does not work for everybody, especially for those with acidic tendency. Because lemons contain acid. Therefore, drinking lemon water actually increases the risk of feeling unwell. It can cause vomiting, as per experts.
