Bihar has been placed on high alert as a result of severe flash floods occurring in Nepal. The state government has warned that water levels in the Gandak River could increase significantly within the next five to six hours. Reports describe harrowing scenes of floodwaters inundating structures and sweeping away vehicles and homes in Nepal, particularly near the border with Tibet. The catastrophic event has reportedly claimed over twenty lives, with numerous individuals still unaccounted for, including more than one hundred and thirty Indian tourists.

Government Response and Public Safety Guidelines

Officials from the Bihar government have announced that both Bihar and its neighbour Uttar Pradesh are on alert due to the flood situation in Nepal. Several rivers originating in Nepal, such as the Gandak and the Kosi, flow into Bihar, heightening concerns. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Chaudhary has advised residents in bordering districts to stay vigilant, emphasising the critical nature of the next few hours. Despite the gravity of the situation, he reassured the public by stating that there is currently no cause for panic.

Chaudhary, who also oversees the state’s water resources, stated that the surging waters from Nepal are predicted to elevate the Gandak River’s levels. He noted that water is expected to reach the Valmikinagar barrage shortly, likely within two to three hours. Presently, the water levels in the Gandak River are deemed relatively low, which Chaudhary identified as a potentially advantageous factor in managing the situation.

Initial assessments suggest that as much as two hundred and fifty thousand cusecs of water may ultimately flow through the Valmikinagar barrage, posing a risk to nearby areas. The government is closely monitoring the situation and will take further precautions as needed to ensure the safety of residents.

Preparedness of Rescue Teams and Community Initiatives

Rescue teams have been placed on standby in anticipation of rising floodwaters. Authorities are prepared to facilitate evacuation if necessary and have emphasised the importance of community awareness in disaster preparedness efforts. Local officials are urging residents to stay informed through official channels and to adhere to safety recommendations as potential threats grow.

Authorities are also coordinating with local disaster management teams to assess the ongoing situation and determine the best courses of action as conditions evolve.
