Her Story: British-Bangladeshi Economist Who Deserves a Hype

The CSR Journal Magazine

Naila Kabeer is a British-Bangladeshi social economist, researcher, fellow writer, and professor at the London School of Economics. Well, she even has Indian origins.

Naila Kabeer was born in Calcutta, West Bengal, India, but soon after her birth, her family migrated to East Bengal, which is now Bangladesh. After completing her early education in Bangladesh, Kabeer soon moved to the UK for further education, where she did a BSc in Economics from the London School of Economics and later an MSc from University College London.

While completing her PhD fieldwork, Naila’s attention was caught by a village in Bangladesh. It was after this that she took an active part in developing methods for understanding gender concerns in policy and planning at the rural level.

Her work mainly focuses on poverty, gender, and social policy issues. Institutions of the government, international multilateral agencies, and NGOs have often invited Kabeer to work with them. These include institutions like Oxfam, ActionAid, Women for Women International, and many more. Additionally, she has also worked with a number of international development agencies of the United Nations.

During her career, Kabeer authored numerous books like Reverse Realities, The Power to Choose, The Quest for National Identity, and many more.

Kabeer is currently on the advisory editorial committee of the Feminist Review Trust and is happily engaged with her research on social protection strategies and the struggle for citizenship among workers in the informal economy.

Often, the most beautiful works fail to catch our eye. Naila Kabeer’s works are a few of them.

To catch hold of her work and to know more such interesting feminist works, keep following The CSR Journal’s Her Story.
