The capital experienced light to moderate rainfall during the morning, following significant downpours the previous day. Areas like South Avenue reportedly witnessed light rain, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed showers across various localities.

Regions including Palam, Jafarpur, Lodhi Road, Safdarjung, and Ridge received the rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. By 8:30 am, the temperature was recorded at 26.4 degrees Celsius, showcasing a substantial drop in humidity levels following the rain showers.

While the rainfall brought relief to residents, it also resulted in waterlogging in several areas. Specific localities, such as Geeta Colony and Akbar Road, experienced minor accumulation of rainwater during the morning hours, impacting daily activities.

Impact on Transportation and Airport Operations

The rainfall not only affected local areas but also had repercussions in the wider National Capital Region, particularly in Gurugram, where some key stretches reported waterlogging. This accumulation of rainwater disrupted vehicular movement, causing difficulties for daily commuters in the region.

The ongoing rain also caused disruptions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, where multiple domestic flights were delayed due to adverse weather conditions. Flights arriving from cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Port Blair encountered significant delays as rainwater accumulated on the airport’s premises.

An employee at the airport, Govinda Pandey, expressed concern over the unprecedented level of waterlogging, stating it may affect the facility’s reputation. He raised issues regarding the drainage systems, suggesting that blockages could be part of the problem. Pandey urged for immediate measures to rectify infrastructure deficiencies and prevent future occurrences of similar events.

Ongoing Rainfall in Surrounding Regions

In addition to the rainfall in New Delhi, other regions, including Rajasthan’s Dausa city, are experiencing heavy rain, which has led to severely waterlogged roads and disruption of local traffic. The India Meteorological Department issued warnings of continued heavy rainfall for the area, indicating a broad weather system affecting multiple states.

The district collector in Dholpur has declared a holiday for classes 1 to 12 in all government and private schools due to the adverse weather conditions. However, academic and non-academic staff members are still required to report for routine duties, according to local authorities.

The IMD had previously issued warnings for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh on September 4 and 5. Further rainfall activity is expected in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh over the coming days, while Peninsular India will likely see subdued rain activity over the next week.
