The medical and forensic findings following the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College have confirmed physical signs of violence, while ruling out immediate visible genital injuries. The forensic report suggests that the possibility of sexual assault “cannot be ruled out.”
The student underwent a medical examination at 10 pm on June 26, a day after she accused three men of raping her inside the college premises. The medical team noted “abrasion marks around the neck” and “a few marks” on her chest and private parts. However, doctors reported an absence of lacerations or injuries in the genital or oral regions.
A police official earlier revealed that the initial examination aligned with the survivor’s account, stating that the woman bore signs of “forceful penetration, bite marks and nail scratches” on her body, although conclusive evidence is still pending forensic verification.
Three vaginal swab samples were collected and sent to the forensic science laboratory for further analysis. A urine pregnancy test was also conducted and returned negative.
Marks on Neck were Seen
The forensic report stated: “Abrasion marks around the neck was seen. Few marks over the….. (private parts) was seen,” and concluded that “sexual assault cannot be ruled out.”
The survivor, a student at South Calcutta Law College, alleged that she was attacked on the evening of June 25, after she turned down a marriage proposal from the main accused, Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student and ex-general secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). According to her complaint, Mishra assaulted her while two other students confined her in the room.
She told police that despite begging for mercy, the accused ignored her. “I kept saying, ‘I can’t do this. I have a boyfriend, I love him.’ But he wouldn’t listen. I touched his feet and begged him to let me go,” the student said in her statement.
After experiencing a panic attack during the assault, she said the accused gave her an inhaler before moving her to another location — allegedly the guard’s room — where the assault continued. She also claimed she was hit on the head with a hockey stick during the ordeal and released around 10:50 pm, with threats not to disclose the incident.
Four Arrests So Far
The Kolkata Police have arrested four individuals so far. The list includes Mishra and two current students — Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee — who allegedly aided in the crime. A fourth arrest was made on Saturday when security guard Pinaki Banerjee was detained after CCTV footage confirmed his presence at the scene. Police sources described Banerjee’s behavior during questioning as “incoherent and inconsistent.”
Investigators say the guard’s room, where the assault allegedly continued, was vacated by him at the demand of the accused. That room and an adjacent student union office have been sealed for forensic examination.
To oversee the investigation, the Kolkata Police has assembled a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of ACP Pradip Kumar Ghosal.
The case has taken on political overtones due to Mishra’s past role in the TMCP, the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Opposition party BJP has criticised the TMC, accusing it of shielding the accused. Images showing Mishra alongside senior TMC leaders, including MP Abhishek Banerjee — nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — have been widely circulated online.
BJP Holds Protest
While the TMC has distanced itself from Mishra, stating he no longer holds any position in the party, the political fallout continues. The BJP staged a large protest outside the Kasba Police Station, during which several leaders, including state BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar, were detained.
This case comes less than a year after another horrific sexual assault and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, an incident that also triggered public outrage and statewide protests.
As investigators await forensic confirmation, public attention remains fixed on the outcome of this high-profile case, demanding justice and accountability for the survivor.
