Stubb’s statements underscored the unity among the nations involved, expressing their intent to contribute positively to maintaining safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Details of the Joint Statement

The joint statement articulated strong disapproval of the Iranian attacks on unarmed commercial vessels and highlighted the targeting of civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas facilities. Leaders expressed their deep concern over the escalating tensions in the region, urging Iran to halt its hostile actions such as laying mines, drone strikes, missile attacks, and efforts to obstruct navigation through the Strait. They called for the country to adhere to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817.

The document reaffirmed that freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The signatory countries warned that any disruptions would have far-reaching impacts, with particular effects on vulnerable populations reliant on global trade. They underscored that interference with international shipping represents a serious threat to global peace and security.

Furthermore, the coalition expressed readiness to take collective action to ensure maritime security in the region. The statement detailed their commitment to contribute to efforts aimed at securing safe navigation through the Strait. It also conveyed a willingness to support nations adversely impacted by these conflicts, particularly through channels provided by the United Nations and International Financial Institutions (IFIs). This collective effort emphasizes the importance of global cooperation to maintain security and prosperity.

The statement calls upon all countries to respect international law and uphold essential principles to foster international security and prosperity. The leaders reiterated their belief that maritime security and the principle of free navigation are beneficial for all nations worldwide. Through this unified stance, the nations aim to mitigate tensions and reinforce the importance of adhering to international agreements in safeguarding maritime operations.
