DMRC Soon to Transport Cargo to Reduce Vehicular Pollution

Other than carrying passengers, the Delhi Metro will also soon be used to carry transport cargo. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with logistic service provider Blue Dart. This MoU will allow the transport cargo company to send parcels via Metro train during non-peak hours. It is the first of its kind initiative in the entire South Asia Pacific region, according to the Delhi Metro officials.

Cargo Transport in Phases

For carrying the cargo, the last coaches with minimal passenger movement will be used. Initial trials will be carried out for a few days on the blue line and later will be implemented for different lines in a phased manner.
The project aims to utilise the existing Metro capacity. The move will also reduce dependency on road transport by giving an alternative and reliable channel for movement of shipments. This will in turn reduce congestion and curb vehicular emissions.
Madrid Metro has also initiated a pilot project in collaboration with logistics partners to transport parcels via Metro rail. The move is set to reduce traffic and pollution. According to DMRC spokesperson, Delhi Metro is actively engaging with Madrid Metro to exchange insights and best practices in urban freight transportations.
