Dhurandhar banned in Gulf; producers seek PM Modi’s intervention

The CSR Journal Magazine

A conglomerate of Indian filmmakers, the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA), wrote to PM Modi to intervene and help lift the ban on the highest grossed film Dhurandhar, banned in the Middle East. Ranveer Singh starrer Dhurandhar did not get release in many Middle Eastern countries such as UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and even Saudi Arabia.

What Indian filmmakers write to PM Modi?

Stating the ban as ‘unilateral and uncalled for’, the letter reads, “We earnestly appeal to your kind self to intervene regarding the unilateral and uncalled-for ban imposed on the film ‘Dhurandhar’ by the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Our member producer has made this film and has released the same after getting certification by the Central Board of Film Certification, and the ban imposed by the above countries is a suppression of the Freedom of Expression of our member, as the film has emerged as one of the biggest hits in Indian cinema,”.

The film had received a certificate in December, prior to the release and since the release it has turned out to be one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films in history. In the letter the film conglomerate has requested the Central government to intervene and help revoke the ban, “We, as representatives of the largest and oldest Producers’ Association, IMPPA, request you earnestly with folded hands to kindly intervene, as the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia are India-friendly countries, and we conduct regular business with them across multiple sectors. We therefore humbly request that the Government of India take up this matter with the concerned authorities in these countries and make efforts to ensure that freedom of expression is respected and the ban is revoked at the earliest,”.

The spy thriller starring Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, and R Madhavan have made Rs 1230 crore worldwide, this becomes the 4th highest-grossing Indian film of all time. This is the only Bollywood film to make Rs 800 crore net.
