CSR News: ‘Run for Leprosy’ Awareness Marathon hosted in Mumbai

Mumbai, India: Lok Seva Sangam (LSS), in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Health Services (Leprosy), Mumbai, and the Mumbai Health Department, successfully organized the ‘Run for Leprosy’ Awareness Marathon in association with K J Somaiya College.
The event was part of LSS’s ongoing efforts under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme
(NLEP) to raise awareness about leprosy and support the Government of India’s mission to
eliminate leprosy transmission by 2027 and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) target for
2030.
The marathon witnessed the participation of over 260 students from K.J. Somaiya
Physiotherapy College, K.J. Somaiya Medical College, K.J. Somaiya Engineering College, and
six other institutions. Distinguished guests included:
● Dr. Manish Renghe – Assistant Director, Health Services, Leprosy, Mumbai
● Dr. Shweta Manwadkar – Dean, K.J. Somaiya Physiotherapy College
● Dr. Samir Vinayak Joshi – Dean, K.J. Somaiya Medical College
● Dr. Manisha Bobade – CEO, K.J. Somaiya Hospital and Research Centre
● Mr. Gandhi Anna – Leprosy Patient & Community Representative
The event commenced with registrations at 7:00 AM, followed by a warm-up session and an
informative talk on leprosy symptoms. The 3 km marathon began at 8:15 AM, with participants
running in solidarity to spread awareness and eliminate the stigma surrounding leprosy. The run
concluded with refreshments, to integrate Hansen’s patients into the mainstream, they set up a
beverage stall that received enthusiastic support and patronage. The top three male and female
runners were recognized and awarded for their performance. The event wrapped up with a vote
of thanks and closing remarks at 10:45 AM.
Lok Seva Sangam, founded in 1976, has been at the forefront of healthcare initiatives, focusing
on the eradication of leprosy and tuberculosis, while also contributing to education and women’s
empowerment. The organization remains committed to fostering inclusive and healthy
communities through awareness and intervention programs.
