Coal Production Exceeds One Billion Tonnes for Second Consecutive Year

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s coal production has surpassed the one-billion-tonnes mark for the second year in a row, indicating a robust fulfillment of energy requirements, as stated by the government. The nation achieved this landmark on March 20 and recorded its highest coal production ever, reaching 1,048 million tonnes during the 2024-25 financial year. The Ministry of Coal highlighted that this achievement emphasizes India’s growing self-sufficiency in the energy sector, reiterating its dedication to providing a reliable fuel supply to essential industries.

Renewed Efforts in Coal Supply Management

The Ministry of Coal indicated that the steady and heightened levels of coal production have ensured India can effectively address increasing energy demands. This ongoing effort has allowed the power sector to maintain historical stock levels at coal-fired thermal power plants, which are crucial for the country’s energy infrastructure.

Significant Coal Reserves Available

Earlier this month, India reported a coal production total of 200 million tonnes from both commercial and captive coal mines. Currently, thermal power plants have over 53 million tonnes of coal in stock, which is sufficient to meet demand for approximately 23 days at present consumption rates. Furthermore, pithead coal inventories at various commercial and captive mines are estimated to be around 147 million tonnes, in addition to stocks in transit, at ports, and in storage facilities.

Projected Power Demand for the Upcoming Year

The Central Electricity Authority has projected that electricity demand this year may reach between 265 to 270 gigawatts. This anticipated increase in demand is primarily due to the surge in electricity usage attributed to air conditioning during the summer months. In this light, it is crucial to note that despite the expansion of renewable energy sources, which now account for nearly 52% of the energy mix, coal-based thermal power remains dominant in India’s electricity generation portfolio, boasting approximately 250 gigawatts of installed capacity.
