The Tribal Area Development Department, under the Government of Rajasthan, has partnered with Magic Bus India Foundation to introduce life skills education into the curriculum of Ashram Hostels and Residential Schools. This collaboration will equip approximately 42,000 adolescents with life skills.
This MoU will empower adolescents through a teacher and warden-led, activity-based life skills education programme tailored to the specific needs of the State’s tribal communities. The programme will be introduced across 440 Ashram Hostels and 53 Residential Schools in 25 districts, ensuring that life skills education reaches some of the most underprivileged population in the state.
The programme will be implemented over three years. The first year will focus on identifying and training Master Trainers from the Tribal Area Development Department, contextualising the curriculum, and rolling out the initial life skills sessions in the Ashram Hostels and Residential Schools. In the second year, the Holistic Progress Card (HPC) will be integrated to measure life skills outcomes, enhance monitoring, and introduce Magic Mitra, a WhatsApp-based AI chatbot for real-time tracking. In the third year, efforts will shift towards strengthening the system for continued implementation and monitoring, ensuring the sustainability of the life skills programme.
Teachers, wardens, and assistant wardens from 493 Ashram Hostels and Residential Schools of the Tribal Area Development Department will receive life skills training from Master Trainers. They will then be prepared to deliver life skills education to adolescents in grades 6th to 12th.
This partnership demonstrates Rajasthan’s dedication to providing holistic education that goes beyond academics. It focuses on developing essential life skills in adolescents. By nurturing these skills, the programme aims to boost adolescents’ confidence, aspirations, and resilience, which will lead to improved school outcomes.
Ms. Pragya Kewalramani, Commissioner of the Tribal Area Development Department, Rajasthan, said, “This Collaboration with Magic Bus India Foundation is a significant step towards holistic personality development of tribal students. Through this MoU, we aim to equip our adolescents with life skills education, empowering them to be self-reliant and active participants in their communities. We are confident that this partnership will lead to sustained progress and development of these students.”
Jayant Rastogi, Global CEO, Magic Bus India Foundation, said, “Partnering with the Tribal Area Development Department, Government of Rajasthan, enables us to address the challenges faced by adolescents in tribal communities. These adolescents live in tough terrains with limited resources. By introducing life skills education, we aim to empower them to navigate difficulties and build a path to success. This partnership will foster growth and resilience, creating a stronger foundation for the future of adolescents from tribal communities.”
This MoU sets the stage for a transformative shift towards an inclusive education system for tribal students of Rajasthan, poised to positively shape the futures of these students.

Pioneering Sustainable Development: The Cement Sustainability Initiative’s Decade of Progress and the Road Ahead

Pioneering Sustainable Development: The Cement Sustainability Initiative’s Decade of Progress and the Road Ahead
In an age when environmental consciousness defines every action, the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) is a leading light for industry-led environmental stewardship. The global body, launched in 1999 by ten leading cement companies, has significantly moved the cement industry practices and performance to a higher level of sustainability. The last decade has seen a reduction in emissions, improvement in safety, better engagement with the community, and the framing of comprehensive guidelines for the responsible use of fuels and raw materials. While we fully recognise these achievements, it is important to relate the path forward for CSI and the cement industry in the context of global sustainability goals and India’s infrastructure aspirations.

The origins and objectives of the Cement Sustainability Initiative

The CSI began life as a mutual effort to deal with the noticeable environmental impact of the cement industry. The founding companies realised the need for a common platform to take action on emissions, resource efficiency, and social effects.
The development of CO2 monitoring protocols was a critical objective of the platform, as standardised methods for measuring and reporting emissions were necessary to track progress and subsequently set reduction targets. Stakeholder engagement played a significant role, in establishing an ongoing dialogue with governments, NGOs, and local communities to ensure a holistic and inclusive sustainability strategy. Additionally, the initiative prioritised climate protection, health, and safety, focusing on efforts that mitigate climate change and improve the well-being of the workforce and surrounding communities.

Milestones achieved in the last decade

Emission reduction- One of the significant achievements of CSI is the reduction of CO2 emissions. CSI’s member and affiliate companies have taken measures to reduce their carbon footprint. Applying new technology and optimising production processes has successfully enabled member companies to reduce their CO2 emission factors. Stringent emission protocols and their adherence to the same have played crucial roles.
Improvement in occupational health & safety and health standards- Safety and health have been a top priority on the CSI’s agenda. With thorough training programs, improved safety protocols, and continuous monitoring, the program has contributed to safer working conditions in member companies. This has helped cut down on workplace incidents besides promoting a culture of safety off the factory floor.
Community engagement and local impact- The CSI has engaged with local communities to ensure that the production of cement benefits and supports the local economy. Efforts have spanned from improving regional infrastructure to education and health projects. This approach focuses on the CSI’s commitment to sustainable development and its inclusivity in benefiting all stakeholders.
Responsible use of fuels and raw materials- The CSI has set benchmarks for the responsible use of fuels and raw materials. The promotion of alternative fuels and materials, such as waste-derived fuels and industrial by-products, reduces the dependence on traditional, more polluting resources. This shift curbs environmental impact and promotes the circular economy within the industry.

Green infrastructure is the future of India

Global Warming is a significant challenge facing the world. Decarbonising society is an important mission for all nations. All the nations should come up with joint solutions that will look after the needs of the societies in the future on a larger scale.
According to a recent CRISIL report, India is expected to spend close to INR 143 lakh crore on infrastructure development over seven fiscals until 2030. The amount is more than twice the INR 67 lakh crore spent over the past seven fiscals between 2016-17 (FY17). More importantly, about INR 36.6 lakh crore, or one-fourth of the amount, is seen going towards green investments over fiscal 2024-30, five times the spending between FY17-23. Green infrastructure is the new buzzword in urban planning in India today, undertaken at the national, regional, and municipal levels. Green, sustainable infrastructure will drive India towards its green goals.

The Path Forward

As the world takes more stringent steps to combat climate change, the cement industry will have to move in tandem with the rest of the world on broader sustainability targets, such as the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The CSI will be in a better position to lead this charge, drawing on its experience and the bedrock of already laid-out frameworks to ensure even deeper cuts in emissions and resource use.
Future success will depend on innovative technologies being adopted. Technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), alternative clinker technologies, and digitalisation can open up new avenues on a considerable scale for the industry. The CSI should promote cooperation and investment in these technologies to help further their development and deployment.
Further, sustainable development requires cooperation beyond the industry. The CSI must continue to engage with policymakers to create supportive regulatory environments and NGOs to align industry practices with societal expectations. Such cooperation is essential to scale up sustainable practices and reach a critical mass of impact across the industry.
Growth and sustainable development are closely related, and global leadership requires strategic investments, initiatives, and partnerships. Today, the world needs to make its development journey more sustainable, and countries need to ensure this change is achieved. They should adopt some of the best practices in green technologies and solutions to foster its development on a larger scale.

Conclusion

As the country moves towards green infrastructure, the path opens not only to economic growth but also to enriching the lives of the people. In line with global sustainability goals, India commits to bringing in a greener and more prosperous future. With increased investment, innovation, and a strong commitment to green investment, India is devoted to becoming a leader in green infrastructure development and will further advance its economic growth sustainably.
CSI has moved mountains over the past decade, setting the bar when it comes to cement industry sustainability. But there has never been a more critical time in the world’s fight against environmental challenges. With innovation, collaboration, and global sustainability alignment, CSI can continue to lead the industry toward a more sustainable future. The next decade is an opportunity to build on past successes and drive transformative change, ensuring the cement industry is a positive contributor to global sustainable development.

Vantara offers to rescue wildlife being culled by drought-hit Namibia

Vantara offers to rescue wildlife being culled by drought-hit Namibia
Ananat Ambani’s animal welfare organisation ‘Vantara’ has extended its support with an aim to rescue the animals which are being culled by Namibian authorities.
As per reports, Namibia has started to cull hundreds of its most majestic wild animals, including dozens of elephants and hippopotamuses, to provide meat for its 1.4 million people. This comes at a time when almost half the southern African nation’s population — who are reeling under the worst drought in a century are facing a hunger crisis.
As Namibia reels under drought, a total 723 animals, including 30 hippopotamuses, 60 buffaloes, 50 impalas, 100 blue wildebeest, 300 zebras, 83 elephants, and 100 elands, a type of antelope, are on the kill list.
Reacting to this incident of cruelty, the Gujarat-based animal welfare organisation Vantara has offered to support the southern African nation by offering alternative solutions to its hunger crisis instead of large scale killing of animals for meat.

Vantara CEO’s letter to Namibia

In a letter written by Vantara Foundation’s CEO Vivaan Karani to the High Commissioner of the Republic of Namibia, concerns have been expressed over the culling of animals while at the same time expressing solidarity with the people of Namibia amid their crisis.
“Some news reports suggest that the Republic of Namibia is experiencing severe effects of drought and while it is taking numerous proactive steps to meet the many challenges, one of the drought-relief measures contemplates the culling of animals.
At Vantara, we follow a vision to overcome challenges to protect every animal from any situation that threatens their welfare and survival. We at Vantara stand in complete solidarity with the situation, are deeply moved by it, and would like to offer whatever assistance we can to avoid animal culling.
In the past Vantara has provided shelter and refuge to animals on the verge of being culled and animals that had put a strain on resources, as an alternative to culling. We at Vantara are prepared to put our best food forward and provide lifelong care or temporary housing as a viable alternative to culling. We are eager to work with the Republic of Namibia and its organisations to find a way that would save the animals and provide them with a lease of life.
We therefore request you to please set aside some of your valuable time to hear and consider the various options and proposals that our team has prepared with a view to balance the mitigative measures keeping in mind that life of every animal is equally precious,” the letter reads.

Why Namibia is culling wildlife

Southern African nation Namibia is currently battling its worst drought in 100 years. About 84 percent of the country’s food reserves have been exhausted as a result of the drought, the United Nations (UN) said, with nearly half of the 2.5 million population expected to experience high levels of food insecurity during the lean season from July to September.
“This exercise is necessary and is in line with our constitutional mandate where our natural resources are used for the benefit of Namibian citizens,” the country’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism said in a press statement on August 26.

Vantara

Vantara was conceptualized under the passionate leadership of Anant Ambani. The Reliance Foundation unveiled the initiative on February 26, 2024. It is an ambitious project that blends ethical values with modern scientific and technological advancements. Anant Ambani, who also leads Reliance’s renewable energy business, envisions Vantara as a leading edge conservation programme dedicated to protecting critically endangered species and restoring vital habitats.
The grand animal conservation and rehabilitation centre consists of state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for animals with several in-house wildlife veterinarians and doctors, a research centre, and an academic institution. It also boasts an old-age facility and disability care facility for old and sick animals.
Vantara is focused on establishing a holistic centre for wildlife conservation by integrating advanced research and collaboration. Since its inception, the organisation has rescued and rehabilitated a large number of elephants, and thousands of other animals, reptiles, and birds including rhinos, leopards, and crocodiles. The organisation has also participated in international rescue operations in Mexico, Venezuela, and other countries.

Coal India Himachal MoU

Jindal Steel Works (JSW)

Across India, STEM Learning is the implementation partner of Mini Science Centres (MSCs). Integrating STEM Learning in the education sector develops curiosity, inquisitiveness, critical thinking, problem-solving, imagining, innovating, questioning and exploring, designing and building, testing and modifying their solutions to complex problems among learners. This modern way of teaching not only helps students comprehend the concepts and their applications easily but also helps in implementing them for the progress of society as the students will be equipped with the required knowledge and skills for life.
JSW has extended its support to install MSCs in 5 schools of Himachal Pradesh. The MSCs have been installed in the remotest areas of the state, where students walk 2-3 km to reach their schools. Most of the students stopped coming to school as they had to walk a long distance. So the dilemma faced by the schools was to motivate students to regularly attend school. The chalk and board method doesn’t attract students nor peaks their interest. This is where MSCs played an active role.
Once installed MSCs become the property of the school and school authorities have added resources to use at their disposal. MSCs have 80 plugs and play models and each model is aligned to the syllabus of classes 5th to 10th which makes them a prerequisite to classroom learning. The exhibits are interactive and colourful which draws the attention of students and keep them engaged for a long period. While students are exploring these models they raise questions and learn in the process. Post-installation of the MSCs, through word of mouth the perks of the new interesting learning exhibits, got around. The students’ curiosity peaked and a rise in attendance was seen in schools.
348 students have experienced this educational transformation in Himachal Pradesh.

Hero MotoCorp

Moreover, these can comfortably move them to the nearest hospitals. The said FRVs come with a full stretcher along with a foldable hood mounted on the side, essential medical equipment like a detachable first-aid kit, oxygen cylinder, fire extinguisher and other safety features. These safety bits include LED Flasher Lights, foldable beacon light, emergency wireless public announcement system and siren.

Sponsored by QR678®, this initiative, provided over 30 women with vital support in combating hair loss, a symptom often associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) that deeply impacts self-esteem and emotional well-being.
DAF, established in November 2016 by Dr Mitalee Shome, Dr Debraj Shome and Dr Rinky Kapoor in memory of (Late) Dr Debabrata Shome, a humanitarian and visionary, is dedicated to the holistic empowerment of women. The foundation’s mission stems from the belief that while India has made significant progress, the country still faces severe challenges, particularly among those living below the poverty line. Gender discrimination and lack of access to quality healthcare persist across all social strata, making the work of organizations like DAF crucial.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Dermatologist, Director, DAF, emphasized, “Hair loss is more than just a cosmetic issue; it’s a visible reminder of the broader health struggles women face, particularly those with PCOS. By providing free hair loss treatment, we aim to restore not only hair but also the dignity and confidence that these women deserve.”
QR678®’s sponsorship of this event with an investment of over Rs 8 lakh aligns with its commitment to social causes and empowering women through accessible healthcare. It also comes on the lines of the launch of a study titled ‘Uncovering the Hidden Link: PCOS and Its Impact on Hair Thinning and Loss,’ which revealed that 28% of women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL) were diagnosed with PCOS only after seeking treatment for hair thinning or loss. This study underscores the critical need for awareness and early diagnosis of PCOS, a condition affecting millions of women globally.
Dr Khushbu Jamasbi, Senior Manager, QR678®, added, “PCOS is a complex condition with far-reaching effects on women’s physical, emotional, and psychological health. Addressing hair loss through QR678® treatment is not just about cosmetic improvement; it’s about tackling the underlying health issues and helping women regain their confidence.”
The event also featured a virtual talk by Dr Parul Saoji, Fertility Specialist and Cosmetic Gynecologist, Oracle Clinic, Nagpur and doctors from the QR678® team on the importance of early detection of PCOS, discussing its prevalence, symptoms, and the often-overlooked impact of hair loss. Participants had the opportunity to engage in an interactive Q&A session, sharing their concerns and receiving expert advice.
Kirti Pandey, Manager, DAF, remarked, “This initiative is a testament to our belief that small efforts lead to big changes. By addressing the overlooked symptoms of PCOS, we are taking a significant step towards holistic women empowerment.”
DAF remains steadfast in its mission to empower women through initiatives that address not just their immediate needs but also the broader social and health issues they face. With the support of partners like QR678®, the Foundation continues to make a meaningful impact in the lives of women across India.
