CSR News: Delhi half Marathon celebrates the Legacy of Giving back to the Community

CSR News: Delhi half Marathon celebrates the Legacy of Giving back to the Community
The citizens of Delhi and India came together yet again to uphold the ‘Spirit of ‘Giving’ and celebrate #AaRangDeDilli at the 19th edition of the world’s prestigious Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon (VDHM) on Sunday, 20th October 2024.
With assistance from the Philanthropy Partner United Way Delhi, INR 3.27 + crore was raised for various social causes by the participating NGOs, Fundraisers and Corporates reinforcing the motto #CAUSEITMATTERS. The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon continues to be one of the largest sporting platforms for philanthropy and to date has raised over INR 84.48 crore towards charity.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Anurag Thakur, a Member of Parliament, said, “First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Vivek Singh for organizing this remarkable event, something unimaginable just a few years ago. What you began two decades ago has now blossomed far beyond just Delhi and Mumbai—it has sparked a nationwide movement. This initiative not only uplifts the sports community but also supports state federations and the national government in advancing the Khelo India and Fit India missions to the grassroots level.
“I would also like to urge my fellow countrymen to dedicate at least 30 minutes each day to physical exercise. Whether it’s playing a sport, practicing yoga, or simply running, find a way to stay active. Once you make exercise a daily habit, you will notice profound changes in your health and overall well-being, and you will become even more effective in everything you do.”
“Today, I would also like to express my gratitude to Vedanta, United Way of Delhi, and all the sponsors who contribute to this fitness revolution. While athletics and marathons may not always be the most entertaining sports to watch on television, sponsorships are what truly fuel these events. Your support is invaluable, and together, we are fostering a healthier and more active India.”
Speaking about this year’s edition, Dr. Sujeet Ranjan, CEO, United Way of Delhi, said “As we reflect on the incredible success of the 2024 Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, we are filled with immense gratitude. On the 20th of October, the streets of Delhi came alive with the energy of thousands of runners, both from India and across the globe, united in their determination to push boundaries and make a positive impact. This iconic event was more than just a race – it was a movement, with every step taken contributing to the betterment of communities in need.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the participants, donors, volunteers, and partners who made this event a resounding success. Your unwavering support has been crucial in driving our shared mission of creating lasting change, and together, we have proven once again the power of collective action”.
Cause Neutrality, Transparency, accountability, and Sustainability are the principles of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon philanthropy pillar. With the sustained efforts from United Way Delhi, this pillar has paved the way to a more organized method of giving through not-for-profits, across the Indian landscape.
The event’s title sponsor – Indian conglomerate Vedanta boosted the event’s philanthropic drive through its #RunForZeroHunger. The aim of running for meals for children to combat malnourishment in the country struck a strong chord with the runners. Under this initiative, for every kilometer run at the marathon, Vedanta committed to facilitating nutritious meals for children through their flagship social impact initiative – Nand Ghar.
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director, Vedanta and Chairperson, Hindustan Zinc Ltd.,Vedanta, said, “This year, Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon has been a true celebration of unity and purpose. Watching over 36,000 people come together to run for a cause bigger than themselves fills my heart with gratitude and pride. We have once again surpassed our goal and raised 10 million meals to nourish children or feed animals, proving that every step can create a meaningful impact.
To everyone who ran, cheered, or contributed—thank you for being part of this extraordinary movement. I am confident that we have created history.”
As a cause-neutral platform, the event had NGOs, which support multiple causes – ranging from early childcare and development, education and youth success, health and well-being, financial stability, environment and sustainability, disaster response and preparedness and diversity and inclusion. While fundraising is one aspect, the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon also provided the partnering NGOs with a platform to initiate dialogue on issues of shared importance.
With sustainability as the keystone, more corporate houses are now investing in social good through these charities year after year. This year, 12 Corporations with 640 Employees participated in the event.
Before this year’s edition of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, corporates had only contributed towards fielding teams. However, in this edition companies in Delhi encouraged fundraising among their teams, making it more inclusive for all rather than only for those who are running. There were several fundraising companies and their employees’ raised funds through the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon.
Another key spectacle during the event was the youth signing up as cause champions, raising awareness and funds for causes close to their hearts and supporting the less privileged.
Naarayan TV, CMO, IDFC FIRST Bank, Said, “Anything that unifies people is worth celebrating. Marathons, in that sense, represent a great unifying force as they bring together the young and the old, the professional and the amateur, all crossing the finish line to celebrate diversity and inclusion. At IDFC FIRST Bank, one of our core pillars is Social Good. As the exclusive Associate Sponsor of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2024, we couldn’t be prouder of how the event unites innumerable charitable causes and an ever-growing community of people working together for the greater good”.
To ensure transparency and accountability each year, the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon unveils a Philanthropy Docket that captures details on all the funds raised for that year. This year the docket was unveiled in the presence of eminent partners and dignitaries
Vivek Singh, Jt. MD of race promoters Procam International, said: “The people of Delhi never cease to amaze us with their unwavering spirit and determination to make our society better each year. We are humbled to note that the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon is an iconic sporting event with a social conscience. A symbol of hope, unity, and positive change. Kudos to all our stakeholders who have strived to make this event a resounding success.”
Together, let’s continue to run towards a brighter future and create a lasting impact. Every step you take truly matters.

As part of the ‘Time off for Volunteering Policy’, K Raheja Corp group, India’s leading Real Estate conglomerate recently hosted an employee volunteering activity christened ‘ArtShala Paint a School’, combing the English word ‘Art’ and the Marathi word ‘Shaala’ meaning school.  As the name implies, the initiative saw art being done at the school, in partnership with ConnectFor, a volunteering platform dedicated to connecting volunteers with NGOs and fostering impactful programs. The engaging outreach and CSR program for employees across its businesses including Mindspace Business Parks REIT, K Raheja Corp Homes, Chalet Hotels Ltd. and Inorbit Mall, saw them coming together to refurbish classrooms and corridors of Nadkarni Park MPS School in Mumbai. The activity transformed the school’s classrooms and corridor walls into vibrant canvases of artistic expression. Over 40 employees of K Raheja Corp also engaged with the children and distributed stationary kits to them. Equipped with paints, brushes, and a lot of enthusiasm, the volunteers spent over 3 hours painting murals and interacting with students.
Urvi Aradhya, CHRO of K Raheja Corp said “At K Raheja Corp, we believe in giving back to the community and creating a positive impact through our initiatives. ‘ArtShala – Paint a School’ was a perfect blend of creativity, community service, and employee engagement. Gargi Modi, Project Director, ConnectFor, said, “We were thrilled to collaborate with K Raheja Corp for ‘ArtShala – Paint a School.’ Initiatives like these not only bring joy to children but also enhance the quality of education. They offer volunteers a chance to make a lasting impact through art while fostering an appreciation for education within low-income communities. It’s truly heartening to see corporate entities like K Raheja Corp step up and engage meaningfully with the community.”
Upon asking the kids how they enjoyed the experience, excited Shwetha and Arati said, “It’s so nice to meet so many didi’s and bhaiya’s who have come here to paint out school. We painted with them, and we had so much fun together. It was lovely to paint outside of our books for a change.”
The evening was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and, above all, a sense of fulfilment as everyone came together to make a difference. By empowering its employees to give back to the community, K Raheja Corp has demonstrated its core values of social responsibility and employee well-being.

What is Bima Sakhi Yojana launched by PM Modi in Panipat, Haryana?

What is Bima Sakhi Yojana launched by PM Modi in Panipat, Haryana?
As a step towards women empowerment and financial inclusion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana’ of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) during his visit to Panipat, Haryana on Monday.
“Empowering women economically strengthens the nation. The Bima Sakhi Yojana will not only provide employment opportunities but also enhance women’s role in advancing financial inclusion. Under the Bima Sakhi Yojana, we aim to provide employment opportunities to 2 lakh women. Sisters and daughters who have passed the 10th standard will receive specialised training, financial assistance for three years, and allowances. According to industry data, an LIC agent earns an average monthly income of Rs 15,000. This means that our Bima Sakhis can expect to earn more than Rs 1.75 lakh annually. This income will provide much-needed financial support to their families,” PM Modi said while launching the scheme.
Taking to X, the PM wrote, “Our government has taken unprecedented steps for women empowerment in the last 10 years. Today I am very happy to launch the Bima Sakhi Yojana and inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects in Panipat, Haryana.”

What is Bima Sakhi Yojana

LIC’s ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana’ initiative is designed to empower women aged 18-70 years, who have qualified Class X. As part of this scheme, these women will receive specialized training and a stipend for the first three years to promote financial literacy and insurance awareness. After training, they can serve as LIC agents and the graduate Bima Sakhis would have the opportunity to qualify for being considered for Development Officer roles in LIC.

Women India

The government plans to appoint 200,000 Bima Sakhis over the next three years, starting with 25,000 appointments this year, as informed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at the event in Panipat. To apply for the scheme, candidates must provide proof of age and address, and educational qualification certificates.
Every Bima Sakhi will be given a target of insuring two individuals every month or 24 individuals in a year to be eligible for getting the commission. Each woman insurance agent volunteer will be given a stipend of Rs 7,000 per month in the first year, Rs 6,000 per month in the second year, and Rs 5,000 per month in the third year, as stated by the Finance Minister. Once the training is successfully completed, participants will become LIC agents, helping bridge the gap in insurance penetration in rural and semi-urban areas.
“If they fail to meet this target, they will not receive a commission but will continue to receive their stipend, ensuring financial support during the initial training and onboarding phase. After completing the three-year period, the women insurance volunteers will no longer receive a stipend but can earn a commission for each insurance policy they secure. However, if they fail to meet their yearly target after the three-year stipend period, their agent registration may be cancelled,” LIC Chairman Siddhartha Mohanty told the media.

The PM says

“The Bima Sakhi scheme has just been launched here to create employment opportunities for the women and daughters of the nation. Certificates under the Bima Sakhi initiative have been distributed to daughters here today. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the women across the country,” PM Modi said while talking about the newly launched scheme.

“Even after 60–65 years of independence, most women in Bharat did not have their personal bank accounts… Just as women were once excluded from banking, they were also not part of the insurance ecosystem. Today, a campaign has been launched to make lakhs of women insurance agents, or Bima Sakhis. This initiative enables women, who were once denied access to insurance services, to become key players in connecting others to these services. In doing so, they will also lead the expansion of the insurance sector. To build a developed Bharat, we require the additional strength of our countless mothers and sisters, whose contributions will be our greatest source of inspiration. Today, women-led self-help groups, Bima Sakhi, Bank Sakhi, and Krishi Sakhi are emerging as vital pillars of a developed Bharat,” he further said.

Centre’s efforts at Women Empowerment

Prime Minister Modi also spoke about the efforts of the BJP Government in empowering Indian women.
“To empower women, it is crucial to ensure they have ample opportunities to progress and that every obstacle is removed from their path. When women are given opportunities to advance, they, in turn, unlock new opportunities for the nation. For years, there were many professions in our country where women were barred from working. Our BJP government resolved to eliminate every barrier hindering our daughters.
Today, you can see that women are being deployed on the front lines of the army. Our daughters are also becoming fighter pilots in significant numbers. Many women are now joining the police force. Moreover, our daughters are leading prominent companies. Across the country, there are 1,200 producer associations or cooperative societies of farmers and cattle rearers that are being led by women. Whether in sports or education – our daughters are excelling in every field. Additionally, lakhs of women have benefited from the extension of maternity leave to 26 weeks,” the Prime Minister shared.

Top CSR Projects in Tripura

CSR in Tripura is protecting tribes and generating livelihood
Tripura is among the fastest-developing states in North East India despite being the third-smallest in size. Home to a diverse population including various ancient tribes, it has vast reservoirs of oil and natural gas. Tripura’s forest resources include bamboo, medicinal herbs and wood, which are being utilised for setting up of forest-based industries. Although agriculture has been the main source of livelihood for the residents, fisheries, handloom, handicraft and tourism are gaining strength.
Since Tripura is rich in natural gas reserves and surplus in power, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has come out with the North East Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 to fuel the development of the entire region’s hydrocarbon potential. The state is keen to to build stronger infrastructure, biotech parks, food parks and a rubber park. In fact, CSR in Tripura has jumped more than 200% since the law came into effect. CSR fund inflow in the State grew from merely Rs. 1.33 crore in 2014-15 to over Rs. 23 crore in 2018-19 according to data from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
In FY2022-23, the state received Rs. 19.26 Cr. in CSR funds from 27 companies. The top three spenders in the state include Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, and Ongc Tripura Power Company Limited, which spent Rs. 5.51 Cr., Rs. 5.28 Cr., and Rs. 1.85 Cr. respectively, for CSR programs in Tripura. The top three areas of focus for these initiatives include education (Rs. 8.96 Cr.), health (Rs. 8.72 Cr.), and encouraging sports (Rs. 0.31 Cr.).

Top CSR Projects in Tripura

Livelihood projects by Tata Trusts

Tata Trusts have signed a MoU with the State government to develop models of livelihood that can be replicated in the entire state for the social upliftment of people in rural areas of Tripura. Fish is a major component of the daily diet here. The state is going through a transitional phase to become self-sufficient in fish production. With an aim of doubling the existing fish production, Tata Trusts’ fishery development project in South Maheshpur has been implemented by the Centre for Microfinance and Livelihood (CML).
The CSR initiative kicked off after conducting a baseline survey that led to the formation of Activity Groups (AG) at the hamlet level. Fishermen and fisherwomen were provided with basic training on fish farming – starting from pond development and management to seed stocking and disease control. Since the launch of this initiative, many people in the region have joined AGs. They are being trained on several aspects of scientific fish cultivation. The fishers are now able to produce their own seedlings, thus meeting their family’s requirements and also selling their produce in the local markets to earn profits.
Tata Dairy Mission, another livelihood project, has given a ray of hope to rural women from the State by facilitating an alternate source of income. 854 women from 27 villages of Durgachomuhani and Salema blocks are enrolled as members of the Tridha Milk Producer Company. A dairy plant with a capacity of 5,000 litres per day has been set up to strengthen the procurement and marketing of milk and other dairy products.

ONGC protects Korbong Tribe

The Korbong tribe, nestled in the hills of Western Tripura, is on the verge of extinction and had only 31 families in 2018. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) adopted Korbongpara village in Western Tripura District to protect the tribe and provide basic amenities to everyone living there. The CSR initiative is aimed at creating self-sustaining livelihoods to revive the Korbong tribe as well as develop it into a Model Village. The project is creating income generation opportunities for the villagers through pisciculture, duck and goat rearing, piggery farm and cross bred cattle schemes.

TFDPC rehabilitates Jhumias

In the local lingo, a Jhumia is a tribal who practices shifting cultivation or “jhuming”. This ancient slash-and-burn technique of agriculture is how the Jhumias subsist. Rather than building villages, they move within the forest and live in tree houses. Modern society, with all its notions of “owning” land and property, has shunted the Jhumias and left them homeless. Tripura Forest Development and Plantation Corporation Limited (TFDPC Ltd.) is a PSU of the Tripura government that has been making a constant endeavour to rehabilitate the Jhumias by raising Rubber plantations. Not only are the plantations providing a place of rest for this tribe in the interiors, but it is also generating employment and helping people raise their income levels. In certain areas, the income levels have gone up to Rs. 15000 per month for a family.

ITC and Tripura Bamboo Mission

The state government has mobilized CSR funding from ITC Limited towards technical support and the creation of planting material focusing on Tulda bamboo. Resource is the backbone of the bamboo-based activities of the state. Under the government’s Tripura Bamboo Mission resource generation programme, the focus has been to address the resource requirements of the various bamboo value-addition clusters. While Bamboo Plantation in the state is being undertaken by the Forest department in forest areas, TBM is implementing high-quality bamboo plantations on private land. TBM is organizing bamboo growers and farmers engaged in commercial bamboo plantations and nurseries into Bamboo Producers’ Societies. TBM has promoted women Self Help Groups for the creation of quality bamboo planting material in the plantation area.

CSR News: Inaugurating the Block Resource Centre in Bankura, West Bengal

CSR News: Inaugurating the Block Resource Centre in Bankura, West Bengal
Alcon, the global leader in eye care, in association with Sightsavers India, has helped visually impaired children in the Bankura district of West Bengal. This association between Sightsavers and Alcon India is part of the ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities..
As part of the Inclusive Education Programme of Sightsavers India, the Block Resource Centre (BRC), a government space where children with special needs come to study, was renovated. The BRC is accessible to maximise participation, and Bankura was selected as it has the highest population of 543 children with visual impairment, making it a crucial area of focus. Representatives from Alcon, Shourav Das Senior Manager, Practice Development, and Sightsavers India, Sayanti Bit, Manager, Corporate Partnerships, and Sampa Paul, State Programme Lead, West Bengal, were present during the event.
The BRC is often established to provide support, materials, and expertise to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with disabilities or special educational needs. The BRC will also serve as a central hub for engagement and capacity building, playing a key role in sensitizing government officials, teachers, and other stakeholders to the importance of inclusive education and the effective use of assistive technology. This comprehensive approach ensures that visually impaired students receive the support they need to thrive in their educational pursuits.
Under this initiative, assistive devices such as low-vision tools, mobiles, and laptops are provisioned free of cost to 60 children with visual impairments thus, ensuring they have the necessary tools to succeed in their educational journey. The children, aged 3-18 years old, were selected from low vision screening camps, which Sightsavers India jointly conducted with the government, and were enrolled in government schools, graded according to the government examination system.
These devices are crucial in bridging the gap between children with visual impairment and their peers, allowing them to access learning materials more effectively and independently. Along with catering to the needs of the visually impaired, there will be separate training provided to the teachers, staff members, and family members on how best to support the children’s special needs. All devices and training are provided free of cost. At times, other materials like games and activity-based learning materials are also handed out.
Amar Vyas, Country Head of Alcon India, added, “We at Alcon are honoured to be a part of this initiative, which aligns with our commitment to help people see brilliantly.
