Following the announcement of results on September 23, BJP candidate Pankaj Gehlot emerged victorious, securing 40 votes. His competitor, Congress candidate Naseem Bano, received 38 votes. The Congress party entered the election with a clear majority, holding 42 councillors, and had previously secured the Mayor’s position through its candidate Anil Kalla. After the announcement, BJP City President Ramesh Soni and former Deputy Mayor Neeraj Jain credited this success to the party’s organisational capabilities and the loyalty of its councillors. They highlighted the importance of community support in achieving this result, suggesting that the party’s unity played a critical role.

BJP leaders expressed that even with the lottery decision, the victory should be viewed as a validation of their political strategies. They connected this achievement to the broader policies of the Narendra Modi administration at the national level, as well as the Bhajanlal Sharma government in Rajasthan.

Reactions and Allegations

The recent results have drawn various reactions from political leaders, particularly from the Congress party. Tikaram Jully, the Rajasthan Leader of Opposition, alleged electoral irregularities during the elections. He claimed that Congress would secure more Deputy Mayoral and other significant posts than in the previous cycle.

Jully stated, “We will secure more posts of Deputy Mayor, Deputy Chairperson, or Deputy Vice-Chairman than before because they committed massive irregularities during the chairperson elections. They employed every tactic—such as offering inducements, exerting pressure, and manipulation—in an attempt to hijack the entire electoral process.”

He further remarked that voters in Rajasthan have observed the alleged undermining of democratic processes, predicting a backlash in future electoral engagements. The claims of interference have contributed to a charged atmosphere as both parties position themselves ahead of upcoming elections.

The BJP’s wins in Bikaner and Ajmer serve as significant milestones within the ongoing contest between these two prominent parties across Rajasthan’s urban local governance.
