India’s prominent health insurance initiative, the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), has successfully issued more than 43.5 crore health cards to date, as announced by government authorities on Tuesday. This scheme offers a coverage of ₹5 lakh annually per family for hospitalization, thereby aiming to enhance health access for a vast segment of the population. Notably, out of these, 1.14 crore health cards have been specifically issued to senior citizens aged 70 years and older, underscoring the program’s focus on vulnerable demographics.

As part of the initiative, over 36,000 hospitals across India are now part of the empanelment process, which allows these facilities to deliver cashless treatment for nearly 2,000 various medical procedures spanning across 27 distinct specialties. Since the launch of the scheme, there have been over 11.6 crore authorized hospital admissions, accumulating to a staggering ₹1.73 lakh crore in recognized medical expenses. This accomplishment signifies the program’s commitment to making healthcare accessible to millions of families nationwide.

Parallel to the Ayushman Bharat initiative, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has made impressive progress in digitizing health records. The ABDM has successfully generated over 86 crore health IDs, facilitating a substantial digital footprint in the healthcare sector. In conjunction with this, more than 90 crore health records have been linked in a digital format, exemplifying the effort towards a cohesive healthcare data system.

Further reinforcing this digital transition, over 2.5 lakh health facilities are currently utilizing software enabled by the ABDM. This widespread adoption indicates a robust move towards establishing a comprehensive digital health ecosystem across the nation, enhancing not only the efficiency of health services but also improving patient care outcomes. With these advancements, the Indian healthcare landscape is poised for a significant transformation, focusing on both accessibility and digital integration.
