An evening outing to collect a repaired scooter turned violent for a young medical student in Ahmedabad, allegedly after a confrontation with a group of men linked to the Bajrang Dal near the Viratnagar bridge in the city’s Nikol locality. Police have arrested three persons so far and are continuing investigations to trace others involved.
The victim, Aymas Ali Mohammad Akram Shaikh, aged 22, is an MBBS student studying at SMS Multispecialty Hospital and Dr M K Shah Medical College and Research Centre in Chandkheda. A resident of Gomtipur, Shaikh told police that the incident took place on January 19 after he completed his hospital training earlier in the day.
According to his complaint, Shaikh later accompanied his friend Mohammad Nadeem Ansari to pick up an Activa scooter that had been given for repairs. With a railway crossing closed in the area, the two parked the vehicle under the Viratnagar bridge around 4 pm and waited nearby.
Police records state that a group of seven to eight men approached them from a lane near a hospital and began questioning them about why they were sitting there. The men allegedly demanded personal details, abused them verbally and soon began assaulting both Shaikh and his friend. The attackers reportedly slapped, kicked and beat them, even checking Shaikh’s mobile phone during the confrontation.
Students Chased, Threatened After Dialling 112
As the situation escalated, the two students attempted to flee and contacted the police emergency helpline number 112. However, the complaint alleges that the group chased them down. Shaikh stated that he was caught from behind and struck on the head with a stick, while threats to kill them were also issued.
The FIR further mentions that when another friend arrived at the scene, he too was assaulted. During the chaos, Shaikh said he heard the assailants calling each other by name, which later helped him identify some of the accused.
He was subsequently taken to Narayani Hospital in Rakhial for treatment and was discharged later. Police said the complaint was filed after a delay due to the complainant undergoing medical care.
Based on the FIR, police arrested Baba Goswami, Jeetu Chauhan and Vishal Rajput, confirming that they are associated with the Bajrang Dal. Ravindra Rajput, Sahil Bhadoriya and three unidentified individuals have also been named as accused. The case includes charges of voluntarily causing hurt, causing hurt with dangerous weapons, unlawful assembly, rioting, obscene acts and songs, and criminal intimidation.
Altercation Turned Violent, Says Police
Inspector V S Vaghela of the Nikol Police Station said, “The complainant and his friend were sitting on their two-wheeler and the accused persons, some of whom are Bajrang Dal workers, arrived and an altercation turned into a fight.”
Police also confirmed that members of the Bajrang Dal filed a counter complaint against two individuals from the other group, following which a non-cognizable offence was registered.
Officials said further inquiries are underway to identify the remaining suspects and establish the complete sequence of events.
