A post-graduate student, Neelam Shinde from Maharashtra currently remains unconscious following a February 14 road accident that occurred in Sacramento, California. Neelam suffered multiple serious injuries after being hit by a fast car on Fair Oaks Boulevard which resulted in severe injuries to her head, chest, and her limbs. Hospital officials are keeping her in intensive care while she stays unconscious after performing emergency brain surgery.
The driver abandoned Neelam at the crime scene when he escaped after hitting her during the nighttime. The tragic news of Neelam’s accident was conveyed to her family through her roommate after the incident. The family started their complex struggle for an emergency visa two days post-accident to visit her in the US. The family encountered significant challenges when they tried to obtain a visa interview appointment because there was no appointment available until 2026.
Family Granted Emergency Visa
However, after appeals from politicians and media outlets, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stepped in, facilitating an expedited visa interview for Neelam’s father, Tanaji Shinde, and her cousin, Gaurav Kadam. The family expressed relief when they were granted the visa on Friday. “The process was smooth, and we were able to get the printed visa immediately. We’ll take the next flight out to the US,” Gaurav Kadam said.
Tanaji Shinde and his family, including his son and brother, will be heading to the US on Saturday. They are also looking into taking a loan to cover their travel expenses and hospital costs, as they are unsure of the financial burden they will face.
Political and Media Support Expedites Visa Process for Shinde Family
In addition to the emotional toll, Neelam’s family had to endure a long wait for the visa, with no immediate assistance at first. “We were told the police would take us away if we didn’t leave. But we were helped by Neelam’s friend and through media intervention. We’re thankful for the support we received,” Kadam added.
Investigators arrested Lawrence Gallows a 58-year-old as the suspect in the hit-and-run accident exactly five days following the incident, authorities continued their non-stop efforts to find him. Despite Neelam’s critical condition, her family remains hopeful, noting slight improvements in her health. They are praying for her full recovery as she continues to fight for her life.
