Approximately 675 slums and 1700 jhuggi-jhopdi (JJ) clusters or unauthorised colonies within Delhi will see the setting up of Police posts or booths “with an objective of providing optimal policing to these vulnerable inhabitants,” according to recent media reports.
The Delhi police will carry forward this initiative after directions issued by Commissioner Sanjay Arora for supposedly aiding almost 3 lakh vulnerable households in the capital city. The police chiefs have a plan for effective night patrolling on the streets. This comes after Delhi witnessed several heinous crimes during late night hours, including the murder of a constable in the South East Delhi Govindpuri area last November.

The New Action Plan

DCPs and Joint Commissioners working on both plans have to come up with a tactical action plan by mid-March, according to media sources. The planning would begin by identifying all major and significant clusters and their distance from the respective territorial judicial Police Station, the availability of PCR vans in the area and the nature and pattern of crimes being reported from the area.
The aim is to augment manpower and make internal duty readjustments to ensure 24*7 effective patrolling, even during the night. According to a note by the commissioner, there should be infrastructure for additional patrol holding points while upgrading the night patrolling kit that should be made available 365 days a year. The plan should be adjustable based on different climate conditions since Delhi experiences both, extremely hot and cold weather.
