Student explores the first-of-its-kind e-waste handbook by Bajaj Foundation, gaining awareness about the e-waste crisis and responsible recycling

Mumbai, India: Bajaj Foundation, with support from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), has launched a nationwide campaign to address the mounting electronic waste crisis in India. This initiative, supporting the government’s vision for a sustainable and environmentally conscious future, will engage over 1 lakh students across 650 schools in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu in its first phase.
These states have been identified for their active participation in environmental education and eco-club initiatives, reinforcing the broader goal of fostering responsible environmental practices among young students.
The partnership comes at a critical juncture, with India generating 2.6 million tonnes of electronic waste annually and projections indicating an alarming surge to 82 million tonnes by 2030. The campaign builds upon the existing framework of eco-clubs under Samagra Shiksha and aligns with the National Education Policy (2020)’s mandate for comprehensive environmental education.
Supported by UNICEF YuWaah and its implementing partners, the campaign will feature awareness workshops on e-waste and recycling, targeting 50 schools per city with the aim of creating long-term impact by formalizing e-waste management practices in schools. With government support and active participation of school students, this initiative will set a precedent for scalable environmental action across India.
Speaking about the campaign, Mr. Pankaj Bajaj, Founder & Director, Bajaj Foundation, said “This campaign represents a significant step towards addressing the e-waste burden in India through education and action. By integrating e-waste awareness into the education ecosystem, we’re creating a dual impact: immediate action through proper disposal and inspiring long-term change behaviour change. Through this campaign, we aim to engage with students to help them understand our collective responsibility towards the environment. We’re humbled to have the support of MoEF&CC and DoSEL in this effort.”
This comprehensive campaign will establish e-waste collection points in every school, followed by centralized collection points in each city to ensure proper disposal through authorized recyclers. The initiative will also empower students by helping them recognize e-waste in their surroundings and understand how small actions can make a big impact.
Abhishek Gupta, COO, YuWaah at UNICEF, said “As a Public-Private-Youth partnership platform of UNICEF, YuWaah is thrilled to support the Bajaj Foundation, which is empowering young people to take impactful action for the environment. This collaboration strengthens our commitment to Prime Minister Modi’s LiFE (Lifestyle for the Environment) initiative and enhances our ongoing partnerships with the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change and the Department of School Education and Literacy. Together, we’re equipping young Indians to become future leaders and creators of a greener, more sustainable India.”
The campaign builds on the success of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and addresses the current gap in e-waste-focused environmental actions, which currently constitute only 7% of reported environmental initiatives.
