The CSR Journal Magazine

Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Mumbai Indians by 18 runs in Match 20 of IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, successfully defending 240 to restrict MI to 222/5 in 20 overs in a high-scoring contest.

Salt, Kohli And Patidar Power RCB To 240

Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted a formidable 240/4 after being put in to bat, with contributions from across the top order. Philip Salt led the charge with 78 off 36 balls, striking 6 fours and 6 sixes, as RCB raced to 71 in the powerplay.

Virat Kohli anchored the innings with 50 off 38 balls, ensuring stability after the aggressive start. The momentum was further lifted by captain Rajat Patidar, who smashed 53 off just 20 balls, including 5 sixes, accelerating the scoring in the middle overs.

RCB crossed 120 in 10.5 overs and continued to dominate, with Tim David providing a late surge with an unbeaten 34 off 16 balls. Jitesh Sharma added 10, while Romario Shepherd remained unbeaten on 2 as RCB finished at a run rate of 12.

For Mumbai Indians, the bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, with Trent Boult conceding 50 runs and Shardul Thakur going for 32 in just 2 overs.

MI Fight Back Through Rutherford, Pandya

Chasing 241, Mumbai Indians began steadily, with Ryan Rickelton scoring 37 off 22 balls and Rohit Sharma making 19 before retiring hurt. Suryakumar Yadav added 33 off 22, but wickets at regular intervals slowed the chase.

Hardik Pandya played an important innings of 40 off 22 balls, keeping MI in contention through the middle overs. However, the required rate continued to climb as RCB’s bowlers struck at key moments.

Sherfane Rutherford led the late charge with an unbeaten 71 off 31 balls, hitting 9 sixes to bring MI close to the target. Despite his efforts, MI were left needing too many in the final overs.

RCB Bowlers Hold Nerve To Seal 18-Run Win

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s bowlers managed to hold their nerve in the closing stages. Suyash Sharma was the standout performer with figures of 2/47, removing key batters including Rickelton and Tilak Varma.

Krunal Pandya (1/26) and Rasikh Salam Dar (1/23) provided crucial breakthroughs, while Jacob Duffy picked up one wicket despite conceding runs. The bowlers maintained composure despite MI’s late surge.

Mumbai Indians finished at 222/5, falling 18 runs short despite a strong scoring rate of over 11 per over. Rutherford’s late assault narrowed the margin but could not alter the outcome.

Patidar was named Player of the Match for his 53 off 20 balls, which shifted the momentum decisively in RCB’s favour. The win gives Royal Challengers Bengaluru 2 points in IPL 2026, while Mumbai Indians will look to regroup after falling short in a high-scoring chase at home.
