External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday for a two-day official visit aimed at reviewing and further strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UAE. The visit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia, adding significance to India’s diplomatic outreach in the region.
Focus On Strategic Ties And Regional Stability
During his visit from April 11 to 12, Jaishankar is expected to hold high-level meetings with the UAE leadership, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation across sectors. The discussions are likely to cover trade, energy security, and regional stability, as both nations continue to expand their strategic engagement.
India and the UAE share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that has seen rapid growth in recent years, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, technology, and energy. The visit is expected to build on this momentum and reinforce coordination amid evolving geopolitical challenges in the Middle East.
Mauritius Leg Highlights Energy And Sustainability Push
The UAE visit follows Jaishankar’s engagements in Mauritius, where he attended the 9th Indian Ocean Conference and held bilateral discussions. During his visit, he emphasised India’s role in supporting Mauritius’ energy requirements, noting that talks are underway to finalise an agreement for the supply of oil and gas.
Jaishankar also highlighted expanding cooperation in clean energy, including an Indian public sector enterprise’s involvement in developing Mauritius’ first floating solar power project. In a further push towards sustainability, he handed over the final batch of e-buses to Mauritius, aimed at boosting green public transport and reducing carbon emissions.
Outreach Reflects India’s Broader Global South Vision
The ongoing visit to Mauritius and the UAE reflects India’s broader diplomatic priorities, including its Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, alongside its commitment to strengthening partnerships across the Global South.
The timing of the UAE leg is particularly notable, as the Middle East continues to face geopolitical uncertainty following recent escalations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Against this backdrop, India’s engagement with key regional partners such as the UAE underscores its focus on maintaining strategic balance while securing critical interests, especially in the energy domain.
Jaishankar’s visit is expected to further consolidate India’s position as a key partner in the Gulf, while advancing cooperation in both traditional sectors like energy and emerging areas such as renewable technology.
