US, Lebanon Seek ‘Pause’ From Israel Ahead Of Crucial Talks

The CSR Journal Magazine

The United States and Lebanon have urged Israel to temporarily pause its military strikes against Hezbollah ahead of planned direct talks next week, in what officials describe as a confidence-building “gesture” aimed at easing tensions before negotiations begin. The request comes amid continued hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon border, which remain a flashpoint in the wider regional conflict.

US And Lebanon Push For De-Escalation Ahead Of Talks

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the request is not for a formal ceasefire but rather a limited pause to create a conducive environment for diplomacy. The proposal has been conveyed through US intermediaries, with Washington backing Beirut’s position.

US officials believe that even a temporary reduction in military activity could help open diplomatic space and lower the risk of escalation. While Lebanon is not formally covered under any broader ceasefire arrangements linked to Iran, American officials see this move as a practical step towards stabilising the situation ahead of negotiations.

Israel Signals Caution, Keeps Military Options Open

Israeli officials have responded cautiously, stating that there is currently no ceasefire in place and reiterating that Israel will not enter into any ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. However, they indicated openness to a broader understanding with Lebanon, provided it addresses Israel’s security concerns.

Sources suggest that Israel is reviewing a proposal under which it would scale back strikes and limit operations to immediate threats. This approach would effectively align with earlier understandings linked to the November 2024 ceasefire framework. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not taken a final call, officials have not ruled out a short tactical pause in airstrikes.

Washington Talks Could Shape Next Phase

The diplomatic push comes ahead of a key meeting in Washington next week, where Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors are expected to hold direct talks under US auspices. This would mark a significant step, as such direct engagement has been rare amid ongoing hostilities.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam is also expected to travel to Washington for discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. These meetings are likely to play a crucial role in determining whether the proposed de-escalation measures can translate into a broader diplomatic breakthrough.

As tensions continue to simmer, the coming days are expected to test whether limited military restraint can pave the way for sustained dialogue in one of the region’s most volatile theatres.
